Honest question for you guys. What’s up with the obsession with the anime girls? Y’all like get off to them or what? I mean, I know some do and admit it but I’ve asked this question elsewhere before and they claimed they just liked the art style but I wasn’t really buying it. Way too many pics of scantily clad school girls with huge tits and short skirts for it to not be sexual. No judgement, just curious.
I suppose it only makes sense if you realize HOW MANY of these stories are about teenagers coming of age...which, if you grew up as a boy, you might remember as a time when nearly anything could arouse you whether you were “thinking about it” or not...and when it was still virtually impossible not to be captivated - even overwhelmed - by the sight of skin, curves, and bumps on girls. I remember lying awake nights, praying that Jesus would ‘take all that away from me’ so I could act normal more easily, and not embarrass myself...not having ANY idea how to act acceptably on a date, how to get past the impact of being close without doing *anything* inappropriate or offensive....

If you never went through any of that, then maybe you can’t really understand or appreciate a great many of these stories. If, OTOH, you were “maladjusted” by your efforts to wrestle with sexuality...like almost all boys...you might actually get something out of watching characters learning how to be real people and have real relationships...you might even see that sexual transgressors are almost always THE BAD GUYS.

Shorter version, if one watches Anime to stare at the girls, one may have development issues...or is just in it for the tits, monsters, and explosions...or one *wants* to watch porn but doesn’t have the nerve.

Just my opinion.

For another opinion, my daughter-in-law, a beautiful nisei woman frequently mistaken for a child, is extremely uncomfortable about the “pervy” content in some anime...so much so that she can’t appreciate a great many stories - ‘thanks’ to anime “fans” who seem to want to imagine her as some kind of sex toy while in-line at the grocery....

Hearing ya loud and clear, Jeff!

My son is bigger than I am...and I’m *not* small...and much like my daughter, DIL is super smart, very tough...and practiced in the art of making assholes regret their stupidity. Daughter got a reputation as an untouchable ninja in third grade...so fucking proud....

*Another* thing I really like about the anime I like: strong and independent girls young and old, willing to accept help or help out, but completely capable of acting for themselves.

Open question: does Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli) count as animé?
IMO, absolutely Miyazaki counts as anime...IIUC, his work is all original, and done in ‘movie’ style, as opposed to being manga- or novel-based, and as single works, not as ~20-minute episodic series.

I haven’t seen all of Miyazaki’s work by any means, but the elements of Japanese culture and folklore are present in them as they are in all Japanese anime (I’ve also seen Eastern European, American, and Spanish anime that lack those elements). “Real” anime strikes me as quintessentially Japanese, and it really impacts the storytelling. I find it one of the attractions...not like I’m learning about Japanese culture from it, but it adds a real ‘otherworldly’ coherence to the way the stories are shaped and told. Makes them...not just cartoons...more rich, more compelling. I find the extra effort to be worth the effort.

In that case, I recognize two animé films as favorites.

Honorable mention for his wonderful weird aircraft that could have come from the Burgess Shale.
