Analyzing Strain Selection

So, I tend to over analyze things, and my strain selection is no different. I like to have a nice variety of effects, for different occasions and times of the day.

I like a:
Soaring Psychedelic Sativa for mind-bending, consciousness expansion
I am growing Mandala's Satori, but haven't finished. C99 seems to fit the profile well.

Motivating Up/High for chores, errands and daytime activities
Pineapple Express is perfect and I may add Delahaze as a substitute.

A mellow hybrid for a functional daytime buzz and lightening a dark mood.
Jillybean is what I am growing, but haven't finished. supposed to be a mellow mood lifter

A strong Hybrid for bending my mind and relaxing body, if I want to get F'd up or cut through a timid buzz.
Skywalker Kush works well, but I have been having trouble cloning it. I'm looking for an alternate, but I love the Skywalker buzz. hmmm

An evening strain for relaxing and de-stressing after work, without a narcotic effect.
Critical Jack is perfect.

A nightime strain that is deeply relaxing and melts stress while getting me sleepy.
Kosher Kush is incredible and a perfect fit. I also have Vanilla Kush as a backup.

The High type is my top factor when deciding on a strain to grow, and that works in conjunction with potency. After that yield, flowering time and taste are all important.

So, how do you guys choose your strains? Have I gone off the deep end and over-analyzed? Am I certifiable lol?

Good to hear the Kosher Kush is incredible. Just started flowering some last week. I tend to look at effects, strength, and comedown when I choose a strain. Taste and yield are secondary since I don't smoke very often anymore (maybe twice a week) and as long as it doesn't taste like dog crap, the effects are SO much more important. A lot of people hype strains based on taste but to me that's just a minor benefit of a strain and not why I'd seek it out. I also don't like strains that make you feel TOTALLY zombied out when you come down unless it's nighttime only stuff. I prefer pot that the high lasts for at least 2 hrs. Don't like coming down an hr after smoking/vaping.

I like a variety also. Super pain killing indica, high flying soaring sativa, euphoric strains that make you smile and giggle, psychedelic mind twisting sativa that make you question life. It's easy to find the pain killing indicas. There are tons out there readily available. The other ones are a bit harder to find for the most part. I'm still searching for that high flying sativa. Super Lemon Haze sort of fits the bill but it's buzz has a bit too much of an edge on it. Your mind can't relax at all. It's not really euphoric at all but almost induces paranoia. The best Sativa I've had was something I bought - Apollo 13.

Man, you are spot on HazeHeaven! Agree with everything you said. I recently gave up my SLH mom because it, like you said, just had too much of an edge. It also had a heavy comedown, which you bring up an excellent point about. Comedown isn't something that many strain descriptions touch on, but it is definitely something I want to avoid during the day.

Nice choice on the Kosher. I have a review in my sig if you want to read my thoughts on it. Cheers.

Ive been on a strain hunt for my entire life until recently. I spend more time researching and finding info if something catches my eye. I find that all I need is three strains.
1. Chem d
2. Og kush
3. Sour d

Of course I'll grow other strains, but with those three, I could be content.

I had Cinderella 99 once, and it was the best high ever .. so since Hemp depot is a cash only seed bank, it suit me well.
Couldn't get KOS C99 since they say its pungent, and I can't smell proof the closet so I scanned every sativa smoke report
possible, bookmarking grows, researched low odor strains ..

Ended up getting LG ThaiXDeep Chunk, and Cantaloup Skunk, since both were low odor, Sativa high, and 8 week harvest (estimate)
Then got C99XSWT#3, and also SSH#3XPCK, which is an indica high/stone, and smells like bubblegum (according to Beanho)

So I now have 4 nice strains, That can give me the "up" high, I want, with some pheno variation .. and a nice indica hybrid.

No man you are correct in your thinking IMO. I feel sorry for the ones that just constantly grow the same or go through there strains so quickly that they can't set aside and build up a nice selection. I view my herb the same way as my red wines. Enjoy I know that I do.

Any particular cuts or breeders on those?

I like the simplicity.

Hey, I'm glad I'm not alone.

Nice thread. I like the time of day description and purpose idea of partaking. Following your method of madness. Oh and definatly certifiable.

A mellow hybrid for a functional daytime buzz and lightening a dark mood. Hawaiian Indica, God bud, Chocolate chunk, Green Crack all seem to fit the bill for me. Great in the morning.

Motivating Up/High for chores, errands and daytime activities. Durban Poison with out a dought. (Just a few hits) Blue Dream sativa, Kali Mist Yum.

A strong Hybrid for bending my mind and relaxing body, if I want to get F'd up or cut through a timid buzz. Sour Maui (want the clone because she is stellar) Dairy Queen.

Soaring Psychedelic Sativa for mind-bending, consciousness expansion. Sour D, Malawi, Chem Dog.

A nightime strain that is deeply relaxing and melts stress while getting me sleepy. Pineapple, Afghani, Lime, Sensi Star.

So many choices and good recommendations here and so little time to try them all.

Cheers

Hahahaha. I am aren't I. My wife would agree :)

So true. I wish I had a big space to grow tons of different strains. There are so many I would love to try. You brought up some I have wanted for a long time like Kali Mist. Never tried it, but I hear it's incredible. Thanks for playing along with my madness.

I like the simplicity.

Being in Michigan, legit clones are hard to come by. I grew many seeds, and still do.
The chem d, I sourced from a club in northern Michigan. It was a clone, super lemony.

Og kush I have is the face off og. A cut from the docta from 97-or so. he is working on a seed line. In fact rare dankness uses the cut for a couple of their crosses. I bought a couple packs of doc's og just to see how it compares. The face off is immediate head high, followed by a intense body buzz. Very powerful smoke. Not for everyday use. Strong fuel, lemon and pine taste.

The sour I got from a buddy of mine from the east coast. . Taste is amazing. Very clear headed, happy, talkative buzz.

All great in their own way. I happen to love sour, lemony, fuel smelling buds. Not to big on sweet or fruity strains.

I guess that's what makes every one's favorite different. Because we all have different tastes.

I like to only grow a few strains at avtime also. I feel like I can dial them in better.

A couple years back a bud of mine gave me cuts of Cantaloupe Skunk by Insane Seed Posse. I was like hey man, this skunk don't smell skunky, are you sure you know what you've got. He assured me he knew, because he grew them from seed, and got the seeds from HempDepot. So, I grew them out, and was amazed with the high. It's a total head high, very mellow, and makes me want to get up and do stuff. I've grown a few rounds from seed myself now, and they are always low odor (a plus cause I'm in an apt.), they do really smell like cantaloupes or some other kind of sweet ripe fruit. I think this is a very under-rated strain, and for those seeking something different, this one is nice.

Definitely going to have to look into the Kosher Kush, sounds like just what I've been looking for. I tend to prefer Kush. I have a TNT Kush that will be chopped within a week. It's been almost no work at all- easiest plant to grow I've seen yet. Is the Kosher Kush easy to grow outdoors and is it a fast finisher? Thanks for all the info.

Chucky's Bride and Drizzella are both excellent wake and bakes...a little fruit in the morning w/ some caffeine and the days break very well. A-Train is a fine nooner, as is Chernobyl. I like Timewreck in the evening if not socializing; Ripped Bubba if around people, and any of several herijuana crosses for late nite pre-sleep: Extrema, Williams Wonder/Herijuana, or simply uncrossed Herijuana. Sweet dreams.
