Alternatives for hydroton clay?

I personally don't like hydroton cus it rolls all over the place if you drop any. I still have some, but my medium has developed into a mixture of several different brands of grow stones. I think the granite would work great for you.

If you like hydroton, don't switch to Growstone. They claim it doesn't float. My ass! Floats way more than hydroton, don't waist ur money/time.
One run with that crap, and I will never run it again

Have you tried mixing hyrdoton with mini-cubes yet? I was pretty impressed by its performance. I would def run that again

By mini cubes I'm guessing you mean the little rock wool cubes? No, I've only had limited experience with rockwool, but i didn't care for how much water it holds.

I'm not a huge fan of rockwool these days either. But the two of those mixed 50/50 works great. A little bit of protection is added against pump failure to.

Hey guys, way late to this, but has anyone heard of something called "light-crete" used in lieu of hydroton? Light crete is used apparently as filler for poured concrete slabs on upper stories of buildings, and a retired contractor said hydroton is almost identicial to light-crete...which got my attention.

I use the glass Growstones because I have a giant bag of them just laying around. They seem to work alright, but I believe they're better suited for soil drainage/aeration purposes.
