I have a 6 outlet air pump I only have 2 air stones is there a way to plug the other 4 outlets? This is being used in a 40gal reservoir so will 2 outlets be enough?

should i just get a new pump,....is a 2 outlet pump going to be alot quieter then a 6? because this 6 outlet is pretty loud even at low.

General rule of thumb is one watt per gallon. So if your res is 40 gallons your pump should be at least 40 watts.

I couldn't tell you for sure.

Like I said, from what I have read on this site, 1 watt per gallon. I use a Active Aqua 45 LPM pump that is 20 watts. I use it on my 10 gallon res and my 5 gallon res with no problems. When it comes to O2, more is better.

The pump I used only uses 8ws and it pumps 2x52 gallon per hour. And I use that in 2 5 gallon bucket. Plants grow fine.

2 five gallon buckets is approximately 8 gallon total (your not going to get 5 gallons in each bucket). 8 watt pump - 8 gallon res = 1 watt per gallon

I'm not sure what or if any side affects would be in a control res of that size. I do know that when I used the small single port pump on one 5 gallon bucket, the plant did not like it. That's when I started searching all the threads on air pump sizing. Consensus was 1 watt per gallon and that is what I have stuck with. It's better to have too much than not enough. I feel that in DWC the air pump is one thing that you shouldn't skimp on. You can get a nice high volume pump for $75-$100.

Just my 2 cents. I'm by no means an expert. I can only talk from what I have experienced. I'm surprised none of the veterans have chimed in.

Good luck with your grow
