Air pump or water pump in DWC???

Does anyone run just a water pump in their DWC buckets instead of air pumps with stones? Will the water pump keep the water moving enough to keep roots happy? I guess it depends on the size of the pump as well as the bucket.

So does anyone run water pumps alone in their buckets and what have the pros and cons been in doing it?

Thank you!

YOur going to want to use a air stone . How it works is it pumps air into the water so the roots don't drown because they sit in the water. And everything needs oxygen to live. But for plants they suck in the co2. So air pump with air stone. Go to your local hydro store te stone is like ....2.29 ish

I am about 10 grows in and have always used air pumps. I read a post about keeping res temps low and the grower was using a water pump instead of an air stone. The thought was; When you pump air into the water the air is always going to be the same as the room temp. Thus pumping room temp air into the buckets.

What you are referring to is called "flooming' where a water pump pushes water up to the surface where oxygen is exchanged.

Flooming is experimental, and I have never seen a grow that finished using it alone. If you have never ran DWC before, you should run at least a couple crops first using airstones before you jump into anything unknown.

Yeah Ive dwc for a couple years with just straight air stones. Going to grow a mother in a bucket with just the water pump. I'll update

not to mention adding a pump to a dwc will only add a lot of detrimental heat to the res that you will have to deal with.

SS1 - You're right man. Not only did it make the temps go up but the res now smells like a fishes butt-hole. Back to the air-pump. thx
