I take it you're in the uk by saying £100 budget. You can do it for £130ish

elg-240-48a/b = £38 (tme.eu)
4x doublerow f series = £92 (digikey)

The rest is easy to find.
4x U profile aluminium.= Find a local metal shop and they will have a off cut or scrap bin with a size close enough and cut this for you for cheap. Just get atleast 40mm wide.
Ac wiring just buy/find a kettle lead and chop the end off.
dc wiring is a couple quid.

If you have a soldiring iron and a rivet gun you wont need bolts/wagos/ac connector. Just hardwire/fix it all.
diyled from the uk. Are you an old face with a new name?

I dont use extruded heatsinks so i couldnt say but if you find a heatsink suppliers website most have a calculator just type in all the details and it should tell you.

I dont think you will be able to build a cob light cheaper than the strip light.

Hey diyled, do you think these heatsinks would be ok, if I opt for 4 x 50w cobs? They're only £8 each !

Should work! You can use 110cm²/1 heatwatt as rule of thumb.
An example, a 50% efficient 50w COB produce 25PAR/w and 25w heat.
25hw x 110cm² = 2750cm²,
so you need a heatsink with at least 2500cm² surface area.
But most COB's are more efficient at 50w and you have always a bit air movement inside your tent, also the rule is calculated with cool to touch heatsink temps in mind.
You can probably get away with only 2000cm² per 50w COB.

Too small for 50w passiv and far too expensive! Look for Intel 1154 coolers the ones with copper core(e3ay). You can get them in 10packs for very cheap(less than 50$/10pcs). But you will need a 5v/2A driver to drive the fans, I like the 3-12v wallplug drivers because you can use various voltages for different fan speeds.

As I'm avoiding fans at all cost, do you guys think this heatsink will cool one 50w cob led ?

Not sure! The fins spacing is a bit too small for effective passive cooling.
BTW, something went wrong with your latest post because it looks like I've mentioned it.
You probably started writing above the second "[/quote]".

Hi Diyled. I've gone around in circles trying to find reasonable heatsinks, but after reading up on the double F series, it looks like an excellent choice for me.

I'm more familiar with the standard cobs, cob holders, and heatsink setup, but are these as straight forward to wire as those?

Do you know any YouTube links to show me please?

Happy growing !!

Ok, this is the last question......

Are these correct? The spec looks great. I think the meanwell driver will work too. Could I even go for 5 strips?

Thanks.

No its not got enough FV to run 4 strips. You need ELG-240-48b or HLG-240-48b.

Yes they are the right strips.

You can put as many strips as you like on the driver i mentioned just make sure you have atleast 4 minimum.

Many thanks again diyled.

I've looked through my posts to you, and it's fairly painful to read. Your patience is appreciated.

The ELG-240-48b drivers don't seem to be in stock, and TME couldn't find the HLG-240-48b. Is there an alternative, and i can place an order.

I'll post my diy strip build for others, when I start. There doesn't seem many available, compared to pin heatsinks and Cree/Citizen cobs, holders, etc.. That's what put me off initially.

Peace out.

Dont forget arrow too. Orders over $50 ship to the US with free 1 day shipping, international orders ship free as well.

https://www.arrow.com/en/products/hlg-240h-48b/mean-well-enterprises
Avoid arrow if your in the uk. I once put an order in for 3 different drivers and they sent them all separate ,each with a £12 courier admin fee on.. I was expecting the 1 fee but to send my £36 admin fee on a £100 order was taking the piss.

Many thanks again diyled.

No worries. The A type is still instock just has a inbuilt dimmer rather than a lead https://www.tme.eu/en/details/elg-240-48a/led-power-supplies/mean-well/

Or the 1 moflow posted has the dimming lead but are a bit more then the ELG version.

That's lame :(

I do love arrow for US orders though. Not sure how they can afford free 1 day shipping on $50+ orders all the time, that's like a $20-35 shipping fee by itself!
