Advice on carbon scrubbers please!

I have the opportunity to use a friends large sized carbon scrubber and save myself 500 on having to purchase one and a fan. The only thing is it's maybe 3 years old but has only been used maybe the first year he had it the rest of it's life sitting in storage, would this cause the carbon to be less effective? Is it possible to refill the carbon in the unit (it's a canfan brand filter)?

I'm also curious how to determine how powerful of a scrubber i'd need? I have a 10x12 room that i'm looking to use it in so would the 4' scrubber be a bit much or just right? Would I be better off going with two of the 2' scrubbers instead placed on opposite ends of the room with two separate fans running them both?

Can you use a smaller scrubber with a higher cfm fan for more effectiveness? Or does the size of the scrubber need to be in proportion to the fan?

Any help or advice would be great!

Thanks

the filter is probably good to use. some filters are designed to be re-fillable. i have a mountainair that is that way. even if they're not made that way, i believe you could drill out the rivets and re-fill it. how much filter you need has to do with room size and the strain you're growing. some plants give off little odor, while other totally reek. i've always wanted to use a filter at each end of the grow area. i think it would work better than one. when shopping for a fan for a carbon filter, you do need to get the right size/cfm fan. if you don't, you could burn up the fan or suck all the usefulness out of te carbon. there are charts that tell you what your filters fan requirements are.
