Advantage V. disadvantage CFL's

no s**t to many people have bad advise i have been growing for about 10 years i think i have it down by now i say use what you want CFL's work great for me the hood i bought kicks ass and i need not look back i have used everyt kind of light on the market and this is by far the best i have ever had the green speeks for it self it sounds like loudeblunt got picked on in high school....

hey, you can use raw watts to overcome an inefficient setup and grow great bud, but why would you want to?

i cant believe its even an issue still... watt for watt HIDs pump harder. CFLs can be adequate flowering lamps, but for yield and density i would say HID...but to each their own

absolutely.

i was just trying to point out that most light is emitted from the sides, not ends, of the bulbs, and that the hood in the av is therefore wasting a shit-ton of light. saying 'it works' is just being ignorant. do what you want!

this has turned into quit the posting back and forth i say you will never get a chevy guy to love a ford CFL's work great like it or not and they have more of an advantage hence the title of this thread but in no way am i saying HID is the worst thing just that i like CFL's once i got it down. and the hood works great think what you want about it but it's great great................/././././././././././././././././././././././.

f-in sweet.. lol. I had an idea once, to put together a home automation system that runs off a linux server at the core. the slogan would be, "my linux house is smarter then your 3rd grader"



what about making a hood for cfl's.. I made nice hanging fixtures, but I'm in need of a good DIY hood. cfl's don't get extremely hot, so reflecting infrared shouldn't be much of an issue, with good air circulation.. what about sheet metal? like roof flashing? maybe take a grinder to it to rough it up some, give it a good texture for reflecting light more evenly. anyone see a problem with that or have a better idea?

ok i cant stand the math any longer ... if you have 1 bulb that kicks out 1000 lumens and you add another identical bulb the lumens do not double period the LUX doubles the lumens or "intensity" remains the same 1000 you could add 500 bilbs and your lumens will never exceed the single lamp rating EVER ... PERIOD .. you would however bring the "LUX" up.
search the forums here for lux and see i know what i am talking about
so your spouting off about getting 150000 lumens out of a bunch of cfl is a load of shit end of story
they do however make for great cloning lamps or vegging yer mother so dont get me wrong they have a great use but quit spouting all your lumens shit cuz its false

How do you figure you have 80,000 lumens when you dont have a bulb putting out 80,000. Simply adding 2 - 42 watt bulbs @ 2750 Lumens each DOES NOT NET 5500 lumens because you have not doubled the INTENSITY, just the wattage. All you've done is added more light per sq foot which has increased the coverage area meaning the plant receives more light per sq foot (not more lumens) just more light.

Amount of light and amount of intensity are totally different things.
So, higher the lumen on an individual bulb, the more intensity. The more intensity, the more penetration. Is this true? Is it theoretically more effective to use less, higher lumen cfl's; or more, lower lumen cfl's for a higher total luminescence? I'm new, but I believe light penetration is key, no?

Is it true that cfl's lack of penetration causes buds to be fluffy instead of dense?

let me make a comparison and you can take it and apply it to your crop any way you see fit .. lets say you have a piece of metal you need to heat and melt and to melt it all you have is a book of matches ... paper burns at 451f and that wont melt the metal so you try burning 10 matches at once ... combining 10 matches at 451 does not burn at 4510 and wont melt th metal it still burns at 451 but since you can spread the matches out you will manage to get the metal up to 451f 10 times as fast

so while you will never get 140.000 lumens off of cfl. having 12 bulbs is still better than 1 in that you get better coverage per m2

long story short ... use cfl for rooting your clones and dump them under hps to bud

sorry phinxter but you are wrong the lux theory is only thery and not fact what you need to do is call GE lighting or SUN systems and get the facts but i can even do you one better go out and buy a light meter and see the lumins increase for your self don't take it personal just ask the bulb MFG them selfs and they will tell you the lux theory is just that theory i would think they would know they are a multi billion doller corp. the number is 1800 435 2677 also i would think this would cause some pretty big lawsuits over false advertisement say for the t5 setup with multiple tubes.

just buy a light meter or call the number i provided if you don't believe me maybe you will believe the co. making the bulbs them selfs i don't know some people wont believe even then so what ever just buy a light meter. also here is the phone number to SYLVANIA MFG 978-777-1900 just got of the phone with the tech support and they confirm that i am correct and that is how there lights are advertised and i think they aren't looking for a law suit for false advertisement you cant really look at it in terms like the match book burning as you stated above that is a different beast all together and is governed by different laws of physics. call the people who make the bulb and ask them i am sure they know they are making them to customer spec.

well i would like to do that for you except i am a lighting engineer fo a commercial electrical contractor and light meters read in LUX and footcandles not lumens as you can see here

1. Set the power switch to the desired range (use range button select 20lux,
200lux, 2000lux, 20000lux) or only 200000lux range.

however if you have a light meter that reads out in lumens please feel free to post up pics as evidence and put this to rest ... feel free to show me the light so to speak because the 3 meters i have all read digitally in LUX or Footcandles and i would really hate to be passing out the wrong information

like i said before the only thing a light meter will prove is that you infact improve lumens per m2 which is LUX

wow that is neat you can claim to be what ever you want on the internet but the fact still remains that the 5 largest bulb mfg co. say you are wrong also buy your own admission you have no idea weather the lumens are increased because you do not posses a meter that gives information in lumens so let me see here the 5 largest bulb mfg co. got where they are today through the practice of false advertisement all the engineers they employ that design for them are also wrong it's a phenomenon what i will say is if the day comes that i find that you are correct i will be very madddddddd ! since this whole site is anonymous and i dont know you can you tell me the name of your co. so we can ask them this ourself i would think that would be pretty non bias i am going to look into this in great detail i really plan to get to the bottom of this.

i dont own one that reads in lumens because they dont sell them the reason they dont sell them is because the meter can only read a cross section of the total light and in order to read lumens the meter would have to read every bit of light coming off the lamp ..
also i am definatly not taking shots at anyone if i am wrong i will gladly post a public apollogy as i do not want to push the wrong info
and i too looked long and hard for any and all information since i know exactly what you are talking about especially with t5 fixtures where they have 4foot and 8foot 8 lamp configurations and display very high lumen ratings and this goes against everything i learned in school about LUX

also on a side note improving the lux is a good thing more light per m2 means more light on the plant and thats always a good thing

Start with "Lumens, lux, and additing it all up" for understanding what the definitions of the terms and a primer on light, and move on to "16K..." for some more data.

Stop being a dick, try writing like at least a fifth-grader (hint: try using punctuation and sentences), and do some of your own research.
