Actual potency numbers, pre and post cure.

Tried searching for this and all I could find was the same "this is how to cure" info, from more websites than google could count, and a lot of people talking about taste, instead of the question asked.
Including the necro-thread started by mona mantra below.
Does anybody have some actual numbers on this? Like a commercial grower having their weed tested both before and after cure to determine if it does anything aside from make the weed taste better when smoked?
If I am using weed for edibles, I really don't give a rat's ass how smooth the smoke is, I care about potency.

I've read some explanations of how it's supposed to raise potency, some of which were complete bs. Like the people who think that it converts all the THCA to THC, so your bud isn't psychoactive until it's cured.
But if it doesn't change potency, or if I'm only missing out on like 1 or 2%, then I have to question whether or not it's worth it.

That’s pretty much where I’m at as well. Couldnt tell you if it’s 0.1 or 50% haha!

If you google it, "does curing make weed...". More potent, stronger, etc. I saw it on one of the sites, growweedeasy, RQS, that type of site. It kinda stuck in my mind.

If you store long enough it will loose potency by natural degredation. If you follow the old hash making processes you will see they made observations about taste flavour and strength and a six month time period became a standard and twelve for that special stuff.

That is all i can offer but am also intrested in you guys working it out as would be some great knowledge here :-)

Weeds like wine, gets better as it ages

I have read that curing has no further benefit after a certain time period, though I can't remember what it is. I don't keep huge amounts on hand at any time, so it doesn't last long enough here to really concern me.
I guess I'll test what happens with one of the 12/12 from seed plants I have flowering right now. Cut a bud in half while trimming, dry both but cure only one of them. See if I can notice any difference in the edibles. They've got about a week or two to go, a week to dry (rh is 30% here right now inside, so without paper bags it takes 2 days to over dry).
Interesting comparison, between weed and wine. They both get their scent from terpenes.

If you want the best potency for your medicine then don't dry or cure it at all. Drying loses a lot of the terpenes and other low boiling point esters etc. Fresh bud dropped in a pure hydrocarbon solvent for the best oil or dropped into hot coconut, MTC, olive or other oil then ground up with a hand blender then heated to 250F to decarb and you got the best of everything. Cool, strain and serve!

Don't forget to add a bit of liquid sunflower lecithin while still quite warm then freeze, thaw, freeze, thaw. Supposidly binds the lecithin to the cannabinoids for better absorption when you eat it.

I consume most of my pot in edible format tho love a good hit in the pipe too. circle.gif

Curing can make weed stronger because thc continues to crystalize in the jar. So, by maintaining the proper moisture levels and burping the jars you can get longer thc crystals to form without any extra energy being put into actual plant growth. I couldn't however say that 1 week of cure will produce a certain percentage of crystalization. I just know that in the past I've had bud get stronger in the jar and I suspect that the air inside is saturated with esters that collect on trichomes, dry, and form longer crystals.

I've noticed a difference in the character or depth of the high after just 3 weeks of cure. I guess you can say it's a different potency. Longer is better imo. I had some 2 year old sfv og a few months ago that was a lot better in effects than a lot of the fresher, high thc stuff in the store

its an easy thing to do for yourself. Give it a try and see what you think.
IMO its a better tasting and a better stone. I dont think THC is going to rise but there is more to the stone than just THC %.
Dont fall into the burp is a cure stuff. Cure is just the ageing process once the RH is at the desired levels. (IMO). A good long dry is as important if not more important than a cure.

Okay, thanks for the replies everybody. Here's my current plan: Harvest the 12/12 from seed plant in a week or so when she's ready, put some through the process described by @OldMedUser and the rest will be dried, slowly, in paper bags. One bud from the paper bags will be chopped in half, one half going in the jars for a burping jar cure, the other half decarbed and used to make an edible. I will use the other half to make another edible and compare the two. I should also have had an edible or two made with the weed done according to OMU's recipe, and I can compare the effects and taste.

Is this the process you linked in your sig?

The cocobudder process in my sig uses dried and cured pot. The way I made my last batch was to put bud that I had frozen fresh with just a quick trim into warming coconut oil then grinding it up using a hand blender. Everything else is pretty much the same.

I plan to do it like that for now on with pot I intend to use for medicines like cocobudder. No need to freeze it tho as it could be done with buds fresh off the plant. I was heading out to BC and needed to crop 12 plants in as short a time as possible so for all my CBD bud, 4 plants, I just trimmed off anything that didn't have sugar on it and put it in 2L tobacco cans and stuck them in the freezer.

I also plan to shorten the cooking time as I think I overcooked the last batch or the CBD levels are lower than I thought. Didn't seem very effective compared to previous batches made with different strains tho after not taking any for a while my rt. shoulder flared up real bad so I took a good dose two nights in a row and it feels great now.

I have yet to do a Beam's test for CBD on those 4 plants and need to ASAP as I have two small plants of each grown from cuttings. 24 small plants in all and I'll be culling some soon. A couple of the kush went hermie so they are going and I want to select the highest CBD one and grow more of that one. I have lots more fem seeds of that strain, Sebring's Revenge, so want to grow out some more for testing. Also planning to register with Hellth Canaduh to grow my medicine legally then I can start sending samples to labs to get actual testing done.
