The other day, I harvested some broccoli from the garden and threw it into a sinkful of water while I did other things. By evening, it had raised its heads out of the water and towards the light.. so it was reallly alive when we ate it! Never saw that happening with store-bought haha

Interesting to see the kale do well from a soil perspective, since brassicas are actually early successional, though tillage certainly has set the top layer back a good bit. Hm!

That aside, their are so many brassica varieties that don't mind direct snowfall either!
And, they are perennials - I've had some go 5 years before giving in to senescence ;)
