A Guide For Protecting Your Online Privacy

I am using Tor now. I just wish these forums were more friendly towards Tor users.
Every time I go to make a post it redirects me to enter a "capture" or something, the scrambled letters, to make sure you're not a bot.
Then when you enter the letters it goes to a blank page and you have to find the post again and re-enter your post quickly (hopefully you copied it before the page went blank) and it will then allow you to make that one post.
Rinse and repeat for every post you want to make.

Curious2Garden is a retired software engineer. If anyone really needs to know about security I would suggest you PM her; she's an awesome lady too, besides being THE most intelligent person I've ever known. This isn't really the appropriate forum for this but I'll let it slide unless a global feels it needs to be moved to another place.

Good tips. I must start using Tor ,as I had it for awhile and know of the benefits.

To add an additional layer of security and to avoid most chances of being "tracked and traced," try a VPN service. I recommend use of a service outside of the US that won't reveal your information to US agencies, especially if no "substantial criminal act" has been committed. I personally use Swiss VPN, when I go to torrent sites, for example.

With a VPN your IP becomes the IP of the server you're connected to and your real IP remains totally anonymous. Additionally, you can download free (Windows) software (i.e. "VPN Lifeguard") that will automatically close down your browser whenever your VPN disconnects. That way, your true IP is never exposed in the event you are disconnected from the service. You also can pick which software apps you want VPN lifeguard to "control."

One good thing to always be in the habit of doing is wiping your temporary files if you use Windows PCs, which includes cookies and other forms of tracking. Never know what info is being uploaded to sites you've visited. And turn your browsers to "privacy" mode; if that's not possible set your browser to delete cookies after every browsing session.

If you're really feeling savvy, tweak your firewall to deny any incoming requests from certain ranges of IP addresses--such as those used by data miners, law enforcement, government agencies, spammers, hackers, etc.

Those tips along with a VPN service (PAID SERVICE) will definitely make you a John Doe, all other things considered.

I've been using Tor for some time. I also get directed to the captcha page frequently. Solving the captcha and copy/pasting the character string used to work, but no longer does. I just go back one page, change identities, and proceed. Sometimes this must be done more than once. Anyone know a better way? It's a pain in the ass.

If you have to keep logging in, open torcc with notepad (Tor Browser > Data > Tor for Windows bundles), and add this line at the end:

TrackHostExits .rollitup.org, .cannabis-seeds-bank.co.uk

Append additional domains with commas like shown with attitude seedbank.

Code:
[I]> Because of the way that tor works when you're browsing, the ip address
[/I]>[I] that the web server can see will change. Even with cookies enabled, a
[/I]>[I] lot of web forums will log you out when your ip address suddenly
[/I]>[I] changes. It's to protect users who might have their cookies copied.
[/I]>>[I] Tor has an option called TrackHostExits that enables it to remember the
[/I]>[I] exit node used when first connecting to that site, and reuse the same
[/I]>[I] exit node. This should prevent the forum from logging you out. The
[/I]>[I] manual explains how to use it.
[/I]>>[I] Should you have two forums that are at www.phpbb.com and www.forum.com
[/I]>[I] then you'd add something like
[/I]>[I] TrackHostExits .phpbb.com,.forum.com
[/I]>>[I] If you want it to work with all hosts, then
[/I]>[I] TrackHostExits .[/I]

I found Tor Browser 2013>Data>Tor>torrc ---Is this the correct location? I guess I'll know in a few minutes. I added "TrackHostExits ." as the last line and am going to close the app and reload it. Wish me luck!

Well, I'm back. At least I haven't screwed anything up. Time will tell if the problem has gone away.
