A 101 newb questions

So I'm on my first grow and have been researching heavily to find what i need but a newb has to have some questions i guess.

I'll update the thread with questions and post the answers i find most helpful under the question, figured it would be easier to keep track all in one place.

1) How long do you stay in veg? Will length effect taste or production?
1) Veg as long as you like, the bigger the plant the bigger the yield. Veg time has nothing to do with taste.

2) Cfls - How many watts of cfl's would i need for one plant to grow? Currently using 86w 6500k and 86w 2700k, have recently seen a large increase in daily growth since the addition of the 6500k lights, why?
2) The more CFL's the better. The reason for growth with 6500K is the spectrum is better for vegging. Always remember more light equals more bud.

3) How important is darkness in veg? Fully understand the importance of it in flowering?
3) Optional, it's grower preference. Two reasons behind it, you save money when the lights are off, and it's theorized that they only take 18 hours maximum anywaya

4) When sexing the plant in flowering, how long should it take to determine if its male or female?
4) Males generally show after a week, and sometimes before you even change the lights. Females won't show for sometimes 2 weeks or more.

5) I've read about people determining the sex then putting the plant back into veg? Can it be done? How? And would it stress my baby out?
5) You just go 12/12 until it shows and then go back to 18+. It does not stress the girls out, and if you're not going from a clone, a necessary part of growing.

6) Is mylar important or could i use alluminum foil to coat the walls if it wasn't creased, the walls now are white but theres only 3 walls and a dark blackout drape with a white sheet on the side of the plant.

7) Watering, how do you know its time to water? I water maybe a cup every other day into a 5 gal bucket with a 1' tall plant, i mist the top and bottom of the leaves lightly right when it goes into its time for darkness, is that harming he plant?

Thanks :leaf:

Welcome to the forum

1) I stay in veg for 1 month minimum. Up to 3 -4 months depending on the size I want. And yes, more veg time = more quantity. However, it will not effect the taste. Good taste comes from proper drying/curring.

2) How many watts per cfl, hps, mh etc. is a topic for hot debate around here. :fire: I would reccomend getting a high pressure sodium, its more bang for your $$$$

3) not sure what your asking. Do you mean the light cycle? 18/6 24/0 ? or how dark does the night cycle need to be?

4) It depends on veg time. The longer you veg, the less time in flower to determine sex. If you veg long enough you get preflowers, but thats a whole other subject

5) A better method would be to clone a lower branch and put it directly into 12/12.

peace, I hope it helps....

How big would my plant have to be to take a clone? Almost a 3 weeks old and about a foot tall, nervous to take off from the plant, hoping my first baby is female so i can take 2 clippings and have a constant cycle. Trying not to stress the plant at all, its currently in a very stable cycle.

would anyone know the answer to 6 and 7? I'm curious to the effect of foil, and anything that might make my plant grow a little faster

wondering about the effectiveness of a white sheet around the base of my stalk. also still want an answer as to how my plant should be watered.

im pretty sure that whenever it is a dark period(in flowering or veg) you want to make sure that no light gets into the grow space. i read that if outside light does get in to the plant during its dark time, it could either cause the plant to be a hermie or just stress the plant out a lot. im pretty sure on this stuff but read up to make sure im right.

Wondered about the water and updated the questions with answers that had already been given.
as far as watering goes, water it thoroughly in fewer times. check the soil with your finger, put it an inch deep and if there is any kind of moisture, dont water. once the soil is dry an inch deep in a couple places in your soil, it is time to water. the plant will survive for longer completely dried out then it will completely drenched. cause i think that over watering causes root rot. you dont want your plant to go without water for too long, but using the finger test works pretty well for me.

i read a couple different places on here that white is the most reflective thing that you can have. if you could have white surrounding your plant, all of the light would then bounce off of the walls and hit the plant in all different areas.
hope these answers helped some.
