6th CFL Grow (Cabinet) - Chemdawg

Strain: Chemdawg by Humboldt Seed Organisation
Method: Seed (feminized)
Medium: Coco in 2 gallon SmartPot
Nutrients: House & Garden Coco A+B, Roots Excelurator, Amino Treatment, Multi-Zen, Top Booster, Bud XL

I use Coco in brick form, and reconstitute it with distilled water. Then I run 4-5 gallons of water thru the coco to rinse it clean. I typically adjust the last gallon to 5.8 pH. In the past I've mixed perlite into my coco, somewhere from 20-20% perlite...this time I'm going to just use coco and see how that goes.

I use the shot glass method for germinating using distilled water. After soaking for 48hrs the seeds usually crack open and start showing a tap root. I typically take a solo cup and punch a hole in the bottom and just fill it with coco to use for the seedling. I'll use my PC growbow for this seedling's early life. It will get 24hrs of light until the seed sprouts, then I cut the lights back to 18/6. For vegetative growing I mix both 6500K and 5000K bulbs.

Well this girl is already a trooper, as I've made quite a big noob-ish mistake. When she shed her shell, the film was still stuck to her cotelydon, preventing them from opening up. So I thought I would help her along and take a pair of tweezers and pull that film/skin off. Well when I did that I ripped off one of the cotelydon :( I thought that was going to be the death of her...I was able to place it back, and it looks like a tenuous connection was made back, as it didn't fall off. The re-attached side did shrivel up for the most part, but the seedling has continued to develop her first set of leaves like normal, so looks like she might be ok. If she makes it thru the week I'll start taking her picture.

Thanks Reku.

Looks like she's going to make it. Feels like she was a bit stunted, but that should be expected given the shock I put her through I guess. You can see the damaged cotelydon on the right, and the one on the opposite side appears to be longer than usual. It's taken a week for the inner first leaves to start to grow, but looks like she's starting to get her grow on now.

Time for an update...

She's pulled through and is starting to thrive. I had to leave town for a couple days, just asked the bro to watch it while he minded the place. By the time I got back she was a tad over watered and was ready for her first feedings.

So I made up some 1/4 strength food, and poured a bit in the 2nd solo cup as a make shift reservoir while I let the medium dry out from the top, down. She rebounded the next day, the droopy leaves perked right back up.

After giving her a couple days to bounce back, I felt she was up for the transplant. I cut the cup down the side and gently pulled the whole mass up to pull the roots back thru the hole without breaking them. This 2 gallon smart pot will be her final home.

She's under 2x26w 5000k and 1x23w 6500k bulbs for veg now. I'll probably leave her under those for a month.

Thanks Spanky and Mewk.

She's taken well to her new home. Her roots are seeking out new ground and she's growing vigorously. I upped her food to about 85% of recommended amount now. She's looks about ready for me to attempt a FIM cut on her. Last plant I tried that on, I ended up taking too much and topping it instead. I'll probably do the cut tonight and see how she reacts.

Here's some baby pics...

Welp...I went for the FIM cut and I took too much, doh! So I think I ended up topping her. Guess I will find out in the next week or so... See how she responds to my clumsy cut, lol. Maybe I'll get the FIM right one of these days :)

Here's a couple pics:

Time for an update.

She's respoinding well to my cut. I think I ended up with something thats not quite a "top" and not quite a "FIM" either...LoL. I got two new shoots as expected, since I figured I cut too much of the tip off. However, there is also growth coming from the tip again.

This newer growth is slower coming back in than the two new tops that got created, so that's why I'm not quite sure how this has turned out yet. It looks like I will have 3 tops total.

As you'll see in the pics, she's turning into a squat bushy little thing so far. I'll probably keep her in veg for 2 more weeks at least. Here's the pics:

So....I'm getting closer to doing a FIM right, lol. Maybe next time.

Her stalk has gotten quite thick already for such a short plant. I think I need to induce some more stretching before I flip her into flowering tho. I want the plant to end up somewhere around 4-5ft by the end, and if I flipped her now, she looks like she'd be 3' max. On the other hand, I do have a three headed lady here! You can clearly see three tops now, as well as pre-flowers.

Small update.

I can clearly see three separate tops now, interesting :)

I've induced a bit of stretching, and I've gone ahead and flipped the lights over to flowering this morning. Hopefully between those two things that will help her reach the height I want her to.

I've also added a couple LED bulbs for supplemental lighting. They are 100w equivalent bulbs in the 2700k spectrum. That brings her current bulb total up to five. The other bulbs are a mix of 5000k and 6500K. As flowering progresses I will work in my large 420w equivalent 2700K CFLs.

Looking great dragon. I have wanted to grow this strain, so I will definitely be subbed in. What are the actual watts of the LED bulbs?

@madrush21 - Thanks! The LED is 20w actual (100w equivalent) its a sylvania. I also have some Cree 75w equivalents that use 13.5w actual.

@lee harvey - Thanks man.....damn I hate Pennywise....lol

Time for another update. I have to say this girl isn't anything like I expected. So far she' more of a squat bush, than a traditional tall plant. I hope she more than doubles in size during flower, otherwise this will be a smaller harvest.

I hope the failed FIM wasn't the cause. From what I can tell a 4th shoot came out eventually. Since its so far behind its no longer a top. The other 3 tops have done quite well. The stalks are nice and strong, so I hope they stretch out nicely.

I'd left a mixed spectrum for a couple of days while I switched over to the 12/12 light cycle. It's only been 5 days so things are just getting started. Tonight I just swapped over to just 2700Ks (2x 105w CFLs and 2x 13.5w LED bulbs).

As her final shape takes form, I'll start adding back in some side lighting again. Here's some pics:

Nice boosh....like the reflectors too, nice way to increase PAR.

Which Cree's are you using? Just the A19's that were recently released or are they the Spotlight versions? Trying to find someone running those Cree spots for some feedback :peace:

@CoolDudeStuff Thanks man, I hope so. Time will tell.

@ Abiqua heh, thanks man. I'm not using the Crees in this grow, the LEDs I'm trying are Sylvania 100w equivalents. The A19 Crees you mention, I am starting to use in another PC grow. It's only seedling still, and I only have one cree in there for some mixed spectrum at the moment.

Update:

My little chubby girl has been under 12/12 for 12 days now. Pistils are starting to pop out of all her budsites. Her three tops are starting to stretch more now, I hope they get nice and She's starting to get more thirsty, giving her 1/2 gallon each night now.

I'm wondering if I have a indica dominant phenotype here, since its so short and bushy...

12 days down, at least 50-60 to go...
