So I fired up my room today ( no plants yet just setting up) and it seemed like my bulbs were getting warmer than I remembered. It was especially the case with my hps bulb, it got so warm it kind of smelled like over heated laundry. The CMH bulb didn't seem to be as bad, which i thought was strange because i thought those ran hotter than the hps bulbs. I ran the two bulbs for about 10-15 mins each with 10 mins in between bulb switches because the first one was hot for a while ( the filament glowed for almost a minute after I powered down)
After running the second bulb for 10-15 mins the porcelain on the light fixture seemed to be warming up along with the entire hood (its a cheapo hood that came with the ballast). The ballast seemed to stay cool during use and the room temp peaked around 80.
My questions are:
Would bulb storage account for the smell it made, its been sitting unused since about april. It was also left in the hood, the cmh bulb was in a drawer all summer.
Could it be my light fixture/hood going bad and cooking the bulbs?
Or is my ballast, which is a digital 600w revolt that is over 5 years old be the culprit even though it seems to be working fine, both bulbs seemed to burn really bright and the ballast stayed cool.
