600w de hps bulb with a 1000w hood and ballast

A buddy of mine bought a 1000w de light to veg his plants. He ended up cooking all of them because he didn't do any research before buying them. So he gave it to me. I'm wondering if I can buy a 600w de hps bulb and use that. The ballast is the b lite 1000w so it can run at 40% 60% and 100%. The hood is the Delite 1000w but it says nothing about being able to put lower wattage bulbs in it. I figure if it can handle 1000w bulbs, 600w should work fine. Or should I just buy the 1000w bulb and run it on 60%?

When you run the 1000 at 50%, you are only using 500 watts. No need to change bulbs as that won't work anyway.

I didn't think it would but I have to buy a bulb anyway because he only had a metal halide bulb for it. I don't have any experience with the double ended lights so I wasn't sure how they work. I will just buy the 1000w hps bulb and run it at 60%. Thanks
