600w air cooled HPS

I have a light I want to try and start using it, problem is where I am from it is very cold outside and the only room I have to work with is in a basement which is incredibly hard to keep warm. I would say the average temp is in the 50's. I got this light originally thinking it would be great to warm up the room while it's running, which I would like to do 20 hours a day, and also be a good fit for what I'm trying to achieve. So the only videos I can find regrading a system which includes a light like this always discusses using fans and ducting. What I would like to know if I can just use this light on it's own without any cooling elements, to help me keep this space warm and still being safe to operate. I am not sure since the light seemed to come with everything else to use it except cooling elements maybe because it is not an essential part. Thank you in advance for your advice.

I'm in the same situation with my grow room in a cold basement. 42F now and getting colder. Never warmer than 60F. Cheaper to keep the lights running than a heater. The light from the heater doesn't grow much bud. :)

My room is fully enclosed and one 400 hps is enough to keep it around 70F. My exhaust fan is on a Heat/RH controller and speed controlled to half speed so it only comes on if the heat or RH exceeds my settings.

I'm running an air cooled hood with 2 400w hps lights in it and could easily connect to my fan but don't need to. The room is only about 8x8x6.5h and a small fan to the side blows into the lights to dissipate the heat while a 12" oscillating fan keeps the air in there mixed up well.

Even if your room keeps the heat fine you will still need to exchange the air regularly or add CO2 once plants get larger. Not a big deal with smaller ones but a room full of plants will use up all the CO2 in a short time and then growth grinds to a halt. With the controls on mine and the lights now the fan kicks in a couple times an hour for 5min or so then stops. Seems to be enough to allow rapid growth. I have a heater in there on a baseboard thermostat to keep the room around 68F during its night.

Are you planning to use a tent or wall off a section of the basement for a grow room? I have an 8x4 tent I was going to install in the basement but decided to build a section about that size but 5' wide for easier access and not have to cut a 6" hole into the grow room thru it's wall. The new section will use a 1000W HID on a 6' light mover to cover the whole area. I'm using the light mover now with my current grow and love it! Want another one but that will have to wait.

Don't use the 600 on seedlings or small plants. Waste of juice until there is enough leaf out there to catch the rays. I'd suggest a small bank of HO T-5s that you can buy at any hardware store or cheap online. Tho you would get better performance from the small plants and heat your room too with it.

I found a great spot to download FREE POT BOOKS . I downloaded Jorge Cervantes Grow basics books first and getting some more. No web site but just a page of links. Just right click on what you want and then "Save Link As" to download. They got lots. Book looks great and complete like the real one.

Long Story Short I have a Gorilla Grow Tent in my Garage 5x7. In the winter time my garage averages about 50-60* giver or take. I run two HPS with ducting and exhaust on 18 hrs and temps stay about 72-75*. When my dark period comes I have both the lights and the exhaust cut off and my temps hang around 58-63*. Now Gorilla has really good thick walled tents, so I am assuming that this helps with heat retainment.

Long story short though yes it is possible to use HPS to control your environmental temps. Also make sure that you have good air exchange at the end of the day as plants need their CO2.

You can warm up your growing area by enclosing it. I've seen guys drape a sheet or 2 over the bulb and make a sort-of lean-to tent where it should be significantly warmer inside the sheet tent. Generally, venting is not a problem with cooler temps.

Good luck, BigSteve.

Thank you for your response, I do have a few questions.
1. What is a heat hr controller? I tried searching is with no luck.
2. So when the temp gets too high it turns on the fan near your light or a fan that circulates the air?
3. What is a light mover?

To answer your questions:
I actually am using a room about 9 by 14 by 8 high that has a double door entry. I haven't enclosed it and I leave the doorway open. Would you still suggest circulation even though all air in the basement is open to the room? Right now I am using two 4 bulb t5's and I'm concerned it is slowing my growth.

Also thank you for tip on the websites, I've actually watched his whole video on YouTube a few times, he is so knowlegdable but I didn't know there were other resources!

I am so new to this forgive me, is C02 a must if say the room is open to the air of an entire basement?

I dont know how much space you have but what I used to do when I lived in Vermont was I had two tents next to each other. One had a 400 watt HPS and it would turn on for 12 hours at 8 PM when it would turn off at 8 AM the other tent would turn on (it had a 250 Watt HPS) it kind of kept it warm all the time -and it was a good excuse to up the amount I grew.

I don't usually use CO2, I used to but unless you are getting about a gram per watt you have not maxed out the potential of what you have so why add another item.
