600 w HPS possible in a 2x3x6 area? Overkill?

I ran a 400w in a 3 x 3 x 6 room for a couple years. Upgrading to an air cooled hood is a must for a room that size. That being said, I was able to control temps while pulling air through a carbon filter from inside the room. I recently upgraded to the 600 and it opened a whole new challenge in heat control. I've figured it all out now, but I'd suggest if starting out to go 400 as it's easier to handle and you'll get very good results.

* if buying an air cooled hood, I would seriously consider getting a hinged hood with a gasket to seal the hood. Mine is not and it's a PITA to change bulbs as I have to tape the gaps in the glass with foil tape otherwise some of the smell bypasses my carbon filter resulting in a very nervous visit from the neighbor...

My room is 2 X 3 with 400 W. Material list click here. Room stays a nice 78 degrees with one in-line fan exiting to the attic with a phresh carbon scrubber. You have to buy a closed light fixture to get the heat back out of the small room with a HID. Zero smell, zero headaches, lots of pot.

Thanks for the feedback. I only work on the garden during lights on. But up there, 10 ft high, I need a light for stuff light adjusting chains or inspecting the top of the hid. Thanks again.

Well after a while of browsing I selected the supernova reflector, lumatek 400 digital ballast, hortilux light and a few additional things. The guy was nice enough to throw in some freebies including some grow of advanced nutrients which is perfect because I have yet to get veg nutrients. All is working well so far, I will be getting an inline fan in a week or two and until then I will keep the door open for air flow. My vent on my reflector is 4 inch but I'm thinking about a 6 inch fan for optimal air flow and cooling, I take it that is doable?

Yeah, odor control is not a concern for several weeks. Just make sure you have good oxygen flow into the room. Small fan would help.

They have duct size convertors at the hydro stores and cheaper at the hardware store in the a/c ducting area. A 6" fan will grow with you just in case you ever need to get bigger lights or add stuff to your ducting. I would pick up a variable controler for the fan so you can adjust the cfms and noise down if necessary.

Bet your wallet is a little lighter too. Hey, it's an investment that will pay you back huge!

Good suggestion with the fan adjuster, it was exactly what I was looking for but completely slipped my mind. That was my only concern really was having too high output for a part 4 inch duct. Ill keep you updated as things turn out. You do have a great setup and im hoping yours has already paid you back in full, as i'm sure it has.

Nice setup, mine is similar, you coulda got a 600 easy, i got a 2x4x5 tent, close to yours, with a non cooled 600 HID, 2 oc. fans andan intake, i get over a pound 1-2 plants no heat problems ever

i have a big carbon filter up in the corner 6'' vent with a 230 cfm exhaust fan sucking air and heat out, put the fans on the bottom pointing up over the plants to defer heat from the plants

Thanks, thats definitely encouraging, after keeping the 400 on all day it seems temps wont be a problem at all once I get my inline fan set up in a few weeks. I like your setup btw! Mine will in fact look very similar, I like how your carbon filter is setup

Many growers have mounted both the fan and carbon filter inside the tent. I feel that in small grows, it's better to keep the room unobstructed with equipment for improved air flow.

I suggest a 4" 90 degree elbow and mount that to the 4" light fixture. Then I would run the adapter 4"-6" (duct tape is helpful for all these connections) 6" flex tube out of your tent to your 6" fan. From the fan (make sure the airflow label on fan points to carbon filter) use flex tube to your carbon filter (make sure it's big enough to handle the cfms - hydro store guys can help you figure out the numbers or we can get into that later). I recommend picking up a washable pre filter to keep garbage out of your fixture intake. I use a/c filter screen that can be cut to size avaialble at any hardware or walmart.

How do you feel that the wind tunnel effect would be with the 4 inch to 6 inch? That does sound like a good idea though

For what it's worth I have this light:

It puts out so little heat that I have to run a space heater at times. This is in a basement. The ballast puts out next to no heat.

i used a 400w in smaller place tubed with independant 5inch RVK i have recently gone up too 600w temps quite high but no negatve affects so far

600 w HPS possible in a 2x3x6 area? Overkill?
