6" Centrifugal Fan

Hi, I just got my fan today in the mail and I tested it out.. Its really loud.. Too damn loud if you ask me. Is there a way I could make it more quiet? I'm thinking about getting a speed adjuster to maybe slow it down, but is there a sound muffler thats cheap around? DIY would be great too :)
 
I'm wondering if I could just make a metal tube out of maybe sheet metal, and put acoustic foam around the inside, Anyone think thats a good idea?
 
Mine was loud when I first purchased it. I did not tone down the speed at all. i just hooked it up to insulated ducting. The insulation seems to muffle the sound not to mention prevent bleeds when you are exhausting smell.
 
cali cat is right it seems to get quiter once you hook up the venting to it. Still gonna be a little loud Not sure bout sound compression I had thought of making a bok and putting insulation round it but never got answer back if it was good Ideal. They work great though
 
Wow thanks a lot. Its funny because I do have insultated ducting but I haven't hooked it all together.. a little lazy right now and my plants don't need it right now. Still small. But I will start it tomorrow, thanks a lot you saved me a lot of money!
 
if it is still too loud you can try hanging it from rubber o-rings as a vibration dampener. But thats if vibration gives you trouble down the line.
 
Do all the tricks posted before playing with the speed. (keep that CFM up!)

Also have heard people building boxes for them, using bungees to hang them.

On the extreme, balancing the motor/blades, but not exactly a DIY project. Better bearings can help too, but also not a DIY in general.
 
I've hooked it up to insulated ducting. It muffles it a little bit but not enough to allow me to sleep. I am thinking about a router speed controller. When the fan starts out, it isn't very loud until its fully charged, I'm thinking if I lower the RPM it could stay at that lower sound frequency. Has anyone personally used one and could confirm that with me? Thanks ahead. bongsmilie

I'm not sure if it would help but perhaps adding a duct muffler, in conjunction with the insulated ducting?

On it's own it would definitely cut down the noise, the reason insulated ducting isn't as good is that the sound isn't "captured" as the insulation isnt open to the flowing air.

insulated ducting is as follows : Larger ducting : padding : smaller ducting : airflow

This means none of the insulation can "capture" the sound, it simply blocks it out, whereas a duct muffler can "capture" the sound..

Duct mufflers are as follows : Large ducting : padding : chicken wire : airflow.

If it's the fan making noise you could always build a box, like with egg crate foam and place the fan inside it, with holes for the ducting :)

Big thing I did, and I use big 8" blowers now, is to use rubber hookstraps (like bungie cord, similar concept and could prolly use them as well. My fans had big metal mounting flanges (does yours) and I simply looped the hooks through the holes and hung the whole contraption from a metal hook so it dangles from the thick rubber strap. Went from somewhat noisy to absolutly silent. Try it.
 
Yeah hanging my centrifugal fan doesn't do a single thing. Its not vibrations I'm having a problem with, its the RPM of the centrifugal fan when its powered all the way is just too loud. I can't sleep with it.. And its hard for me to sleep already because my fucking room is like 95 degrees because of this damn grow box. I'm thinking about just using inline fans. Maybe 2 outtake 2 intake. 1 of each connected to a ducting system outside. Hell maybe even a fan from my window to blow into my room would be cool too.
 
I use 6 inch inline loud fan while at work and all day too with blankets thrown over the duct and the fan and over the filter which is where all the seems to spout. At night it cools off and ijust run a duct booster which i have alreay inline with inline fan. Keeps it good. Just the same i will prob buy a router speed control to use to slow it down when i want.
