50w, 75, or 100?!?!?!

uhh shit i'd say 2x2 but i can control where the light aims... i'm thinkin the 50w then cause it has 4k lumens...how much heat will it produce? and how far away would i keep it?

I always go by temps at bud height for how far my light is away from my plants but some people i believe go 12 inches or more. It's all about heat for me

never owned a light that small but i would imagine 6 inches not sure though how much heat it would put out my 400w i keep about 8-12 inches away. for that small an area it you put like 2 pc fans one blowing in and one out i imagin you could keep heat in check

true that...It's an open room, so heats no problem, i can control it i guess..hps is more of the red spectrum though, isn't it? so would i have to wait for flowering, or can i just use all through? also i'm having trouble finding a cheaps ballast for a 50w at like home depot or lowes...any ideas? i saw one online(don't want to order) for like 25 bucks so that's what i'm aiming for!

well your math is a bit off, you have 4 sq. ft (2 x 2) and with 3k per sq ft that makes 12,000 lumens. Which means that even with the 100w at 9,500 lumens you still are a bit short. don't fret though it will still work but I wouldn't go smaller than 100 if you have the option; the 150w puts out 16,000 which would be much better for ya. if you have the height and some space for fans you should be fine going with the 150 in a space that size. A good co2 level will help your plant deal with higher temps, so look into some of the diy co2 setups on the site.

you can use hps all the way through veg and flower most pple use metal halide for veg but you can have great results with just hps

I can tell you use 100watt equivilant's and ive recently aquired a couple 200 watt equiv's. I try and keep the light about 3 inches away max im normally with in 2 inches but some days when i get home they have grown into the light. My girls have some burned scars but its ok it builds character

Edit: Ignore that i thought you were talking CFL's

As stated eariler more light the better.

100W HPS shouldn't be a major heat issue (Unless like 1x1x4) Even better if you are apt to rewire it for remote ballast.

Lumens ratings are skewed by the distance from the bulb. If you can keep the bulb cool (from the plant's view) you can get it closer and more light on it. But this also reduces the area the light can cover.

Its the balance that is needed. Even more so with smaller 'wattage' grows.

alright that all helps...but since nothing local supplies this stuff i've turned to ACE....tell me...do the top 3 CFLs need a special fixture? or can i probably put them in a desk-lamp type thing?

If your going CFL take a look at my closet it here its pretty commmon for CFL's from what ive seen. By far not ideal but it seems to be getting the job done. There is some obviose stretching expessially on my retarded plant on the left. But take a look i reccomend useing that hanging method so you can change your hiegth and keep that light nice and close but hps is obviously better.

some of the home depot security fixtures are hps I was actually just looking at them yesterday, I think they go up to a 100w.

I think your right, i kinda remember seeing up to 175w at lowes but i think these are more expensive than the one i linked at htg
