5 o'clock's subcooled garden journal.....

It's 5 o'clock somewhere

Please don't post in this journal. Use the link in my sig to go to the discussion thread if you have questions or comments. I'm going to try to keep this updated with pic's and progress but I am very busy during the summer months and may not keep on top of things as well as i could in the winter so be patient.

I ordered 6 strains of Subcool's line up and recieved the snowdawg seeds free. I am going to hold off on growing the reeferman grapefruit and Sub's Qurkel as they are more for the flavor and apperance not the punch.

I took 2 of each of the seeds and put them in a paper towel soaked in 6ph water. I put them in a bag and set them on top of my water heater. It gets warm but not hot and helps the seeds germinate imo. In 72 hours all of the seeds had cracked and were put in soil.

I use 16 oz plastic Dixie cups with 1" of pea gravel then a mixture of light worrior and ocean farms by Foxfarm. After they grow out of the cups they will be put in 2 gallon pots and will become the mothers. As they continue to grow I will be taking cuttings from the plants and putting them in my homemade cloner. On average they take about 3 weeks before they are ready for soil.

They will be moved from the cloner to to 8x8x24 window boxes and will veg until they look ready for the flower room. I use 1" or so of pea gravel and mix Ocean farms with MG all purpose. The soil seems to carry them through the first few weeks then I start them on nutes.

Pull up a seat and check out Sub's genetics, if your thinking about what to get I'll be giving a smoke report on each strain at the end. I also have several test subjects lined up to get more than one point of view.

I just looked in on the seeds before lights went out. Chernoybl #1 and Dairy Queen #1 have both pushed through the soil. I haven't been able to locate the camera so I will have to wait til tonight to get pic's up.....

Here are the pic's of the seedlings pushing toward the light. I cleaned out all the other plants to make way for this new round. I threw out about 15 rooted clones and put all the rest in soil. I will grow these out as I wait for the new seeds to grow.....

Still waiting for the snowdawgs to crack.....

After a week I gave up on Snowdawg #2. Snowdawg #3 has cracked and will get put in soil later tonight. #1 hasn't made it out of the dirt yet. I looked in on the seedlings and the DQ#1 had lost it's bright green vigor and was hanging it's head. I used a paperclip to prop it up but I think it's a matter of time. I put another seed in to take it's place, DQ#3.

The seedlings look good and are getting big. I will get them out for some more sun this week.....

The top seed in the first pic is the deformed Snowdawg. It looks almost black.....

I don't think I had this much trouble with my bagseeds. I was giving up on Snowdawg #1 as it hadn't popped through the soil in 48 hours. I waited for the lights to come on and found it. It had poked to the top of the soil and stopped. I took a closer look and saw that it had died. The leaves hadn't unferled and it looked like it had stopped growing. The white tap root was starting to look dehidrated. I dug away some of the soil and it was sure enough, dead..... FUCK! So it's 0 for 2 on the Snowdawg. The Snowdawg #3 has poked out of the soil and is hopefully going to live. I will have to put another seed in, #4

My luck hasn't gotten any better with the DQ. I went to check on the seed this morning and it rolled off the paper towel and as I tried to catch it it went flying. I looked for an hour or so but couldn't find it. I got another seed out..... #4 and put it in the paper towel in it's place. I looked around tonight and think I found it. I'm not for sure because it was in an area that had some other seeds on the floor as well as a bunch of ash. I put the seed I found (same size and color as the one I had lost) back in another paper towel and will try to grow it out. I won't know until it grows out if it was one of my sativa seeds or the DQ seed I lost.

On a happy note all the others are doing great.....

The first pic is the Snowdawg #1
Second is Snowdawg #3
The last pic is a shot of the node seperation on the Vortex. Starting on it's 3rd set of leaves....

Snowdawg #1 is dead. #3 looks like shit but should come around as the day progresses. It has popped all the way out of the soil now. I have put #4 in to germinate. It sucks that all these plants will be at different stages now instead of all the same age.

Still waiting on the DQ's to crack. All the other plants are doing great. They all get the same soil and the same water. I ph to 6.7-6.8 and it has not caused me any problems. I don't know what to atribute the death of the snowdawgs to. It's weird that it would get all the way to the top of the soil and die..... The seed covering was still on it andI wonder if it died because it couldn't unferl?

Pic 1 is the Snowdawg #1 after I pulled it to see what may have killed it.
Pic #2 is Snowdawg #3 poking it's pathetic head out of the soil (it looks sick).

If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. The Vortex that i thought was fine after proping it back up had wilted this morning. Stunned I pulled it out to see what happened. The place in the stem that it had bent over was hard and very skinny. I think the plant was trying to heal it's self like when you supercrop the pinched area gets hard and makes a knot. Only this plant was to small and as the damaged area started to harden it cut off the nuterient flow. I put some cloneing gel on the stem of it and stuck it in some water with a few drops of clonex nutes. Probably not going to work but fuck, I hate to see another plant go.

That's now 2 plants I've lost due to the stems being weak and not putting soil high enough on the stem after I saw it was streatching. I put 2 more Vortex seeds in to germinate. I'm starting to get pissed. I turely didn't have any problems from my bagseeds like I've had with these.

Sorry to hear about your Vortex seeds. I've got my finger X'd for your next round of vortex seeds.

Thank you but please don't post in my journal. Use the link in my sig to go to the discussion thread. I'm using the journal to show the plants seed to weed with a smoke report at the end for each. The other thread is where you can wish me luck or post a comment.

Update.....

The Vortex in a glass (VG) threw out roots. It stopped growing but I think once it gets in soil it will take off again. I just hope the stress hasn't messed it up.

The Vortex #4 surprised me this morning by poking out of the soil already. Snowdawg #4 was out over a day ago and the Vortex is almost as big already.

I put DQ #3 (the one I dropped so who knows if this is realy DQ) in the soil this morning. I'm not sure why I'm having so much trouble with the DQ's but #4 hasn't cracked yet and I'm not so sure #3 will do anything as the tap root hasn't grown since it first pushed through the seed cover. Maybe Mr West cursed them so I can't have a slice of the cheese.....jk

All the plants have their 6th node and the Chernobyl is throwing 7 finger leaves on it's 5 node sight. The node growth is taking off on the lowest nodes. They got full sun all day yesterday but it's raining for the next few days so they won't get back outside til it passes. I won't be able to do this for long so I'm taking advantage of it now. The plants will get to big and become to obvious to take in and out.

Transplanted into bigger pots and gave them new soil. I moved the plants up to the upper shelf and will use the lower for the mothers and clones when the time comes. Will post pic's in the morning. The Vortex is the largest by 2" or so. All the plants show good growth at the lower nodes. DQ, Vortex, and JC #2 had the best root growth. DQ #5 and 6 have come through the soil and i can see #7 it just hasn't grown enough to make it through the soil yet.

I got an email from Brad at Hempdepot today and he dropped some replacements in the mail today. I would recommend them highly for ease of ordering, paying, and shipping. They stand behind their products and even though they didn't have to they sent me replacements. They will continue to get my business. I was looking through their seeds and may make another order this fall with some Joey Weed selections.

Pic's tomorrow.....

Pic's.....

The babies got a new home in new soil. VG got put in soil also. All the DQ's have cracked. Brad is sending replacement seeds and I can relax tonight. I hate working all day and getting home late only to have to spend another few hours repotting.

I put them outside for some sun today and almost instantly Chernobly withered. I freaked out but then realized maybe they needed water. Gave them all about a cup and in 15 min everything was good :hump:

I have company coming over or I would have gotten some pic's of the growth they put on while outside for 3 hours. It was amazing. The difference in the 2 JC II plants is becoming obvious as one is way more vigiorous. The Vortex is getting topped and it will become a clone otherwise I would put it in flower now. It is takein off like crazy. The other plants are being dewarfed by it. It has 2 more nodes showing than any of the others. I will get some pic's up later and start giving more in depth descriptions of the plants now that the boreing shit is over.....:blsmoke:

Replacements are in. Thanks Brad!!!

Gave them some sun again today and it will be nice the rest of the next 3 days so they will get some more later. The Vortex #2 that is heads and shoulders above the rest by 3" over the shortest. Well it is a male :cuss:

It was showing at the 7th node a raised pod. I can't get that close with the shity camera I have or I'd show it. The JTR #2 is showing what looks to be a female flower at it's 6th node but it's so small it will be a few days before I'm sure. The DQ is also showing growth but is to small to be sure. It seems all will be showing this rate in under a week. The node growth has taken off on most of them and the lower leaves have been used up and are falling off. A few of the leaves got burnt when I splashed them last time I fed them and didn't wash them off but other than that they look great.

The Vortex is going in to the flower room until i get the male flower box set up. I will be collecting some pollen from the males to see if I can cross back to anything later. I picked up a 70w MH street light at Lowes like the 70 HPS I got there. One or the other will be flowering the males. I took some pic's but because it's FATHER'S DAY!!!! I've been to busy to sit down and write it all down. I will try to over the next few days. Shit is starting to roll again at work so I'll only be updating every few days.

So Happy father's day to all you fellow Dad's and Super Dad's ( as in my case ;-)) and enjoy the pic's. The first is the Vortex male. The DQ and Chernobly's and so on. The last is the Vortex next to the Vortex #1 (VG) because of the damage. I hope it's not a pre-determined male from the stress of rooting. Last is the Snowdawg, which sadly was not replaced. I belive it was supposed to be added to the regular selection but is currently out. It's to bad because it is from the Chem dog line. I hope I have a keeper in what's left. The last series are the plant's side by side and then from the top.....

Camera is broken so no pics for now. Transplanted the 7 into 1.5 gallon pots using the soil mix I made up and put some Diatomite rocks at the bottem instead of pea gravel. It's made from a fossilized lake bed and is supposed to have alot of nutritional value for the plants.

All but JCII#1 have shown possible female growth at the 6th or 7th nodes. The Vortex #2 is still in the flower room and is putting out more pods at the nodes but hasn't realy took off yet. The Chernobyl plants showed the best root development when I removed them from their pots for the transplant. I may have done it a little early as none of the plants roots were really filling up the soil yet. The dehumidifiers I bought yesterday have brought the flower room down from a near 70% to a respectable 43% this morning. I also picked up another sealed reflector and am getting rid of the open bat wing as it makes to much heat this time of year. It will come back in the winter if I grow then. I put the LUX HPS bulb in the new hood before I put it in and switched my ballast setting.

The JCII #1 has thrown out a strange leaf and the next node it started 3 leaves per node. I looked at it closer and found the 1, 3, 5, 7 finger development was 1,3,5,6,7,9 and the first row with 9 was the odd leaf. I hadn't noticed the missing fingerearlier, where it should of had 7 it only had 6. It is the slowest one with node development even behind the JTR's. All 7 plants have 10 or 11 nodes. The second node growth on the DQ, both Chernobly, and the JCII#2 has 4 nodes on them, almost big enough to clone. I will be leaving Monday for a week to Florida. I have someone I trust that will do the 1 watering I will need done on Thursday night then I will be back the following Monday. I hope to have a new camera by then. When I get back I will be taking the tops for clones to flower for the test run before I cut the lower nodes for clones. This will give the lower 5-6 nodes time to get long enough that I can cut my clones from above the first node thus creating another branch instead of taking the whole thing. I may do it Sunday night before I leave so they will have time to start to root while I'm gone. I cleaned the cloner the other day. I cleaned the baskets and everything. I just need to fill it with ph'ed water and turn it on.....

I also transplanted the 2 SnowDawgs's and the 2 Vortex from the plastic cups into the pots I just took the other plants out of. I will wait for the DQ's to get a little bigger. DQ #7 was out in the sun to long the other day because I couldn't get back in time to bring the plants in before it got into the upper 90's. I think the top of the soil cooked the stem because like the Vortex it had a very skinny stem below the soil line. It had wilted this morning so I did with it what I did with the Vortex and put it in some water. In an hour it had perked up. This one is about a week and a half behind the Vortex when it happened to it. Lets hope this one isn't to small to root.....

Lower node growth has taken off on every plant except the JTR's and JC#1. They are tight nodes with uniform growth and don't seem to have stretched at all. Both look very similar.

Been gone for a week on vacation so it's time for an update. All seem to be doing great except for the Snow Dawg #4. All the lower leaves have died and it looks like shit. Never treated any different than any of the others so i don't know what's up with it.

The Chernobyl's are the biggets by far. They have the largest leaves and the best node growth. They look like they are going to be big plants so I may try to take smaller clones so they don't screw up my multi strain canopy. Both are very similar.

The Plant's haven't gotten any sun in a week so I put them outside. The DQ went into shock and had to be brought back inside after only 20 minutes in the sun. The leaves all curled up and the top started to wilt. It's a little sensitive to the light and heat I think. I put it in the window inside where the air was on and it came back in an hour or so. I will put it out again later when the sun isn't so hot.

All the others are enjoying the light. Nothing like the sun to put on growth. The JTR is a cross made from JC. The JTR #2 has very similar mutations in the leaves as the JC#1. Random blades out of place and even numbered leaves. I think the JTR will carry similar traits to this JC. The one thing the JTR doesn't have is the tripple node.

I haven't given them any nutes yet because the soil is so rich. They still have alot of soil to stretch out in so I won't be giving any for another week or two. I think the bat guano has burnt the lower leaves a little but haven't effected the plants to much over all. I will be taking the tops this week in hopes of getting these into the flower room by the end of the month.

I loaded all the pic's but they didn't post. I will try again

The male Vortex has stretched quite a bit. It is twice as tall as the rest. It's almost ready to start dropping pollen so I took it out of the flower room and put it outside to finish. I will collect it's pollen then get rid of it.

The DQ #7 is putting out roots. I again am suprised that such a small seedling could do so without dying.

The rest of the plants are within a week or two of being ready for cloning on their lower nodes.

Update..... Took the tops tonight. I got tired of waiting on the hairs to show. It would be weird if they all were male....

First is the DQ that wilted the other day. The damage on the leaves where it had wilted, died. I think my soil is a little rich for this strain. The node growth should take off even more after the tops are gone. They need a few more weeks before I do any thing with them again.

The Chernobyl likes the rich mix and is the tallest of the strains. #1 is definately the larger plant with it's leaves being much larger than #2. I wonder if it has more trainwreck in it? #2 is shorter and has better node growth. #1 is stretching and is several inches taller. It also has double seraded leaves.

JTR plants are very similar. Tight nodes and lots of them make them pretty. #1 has slightly larger leaves and more length at the nodes. Other than that they're very uniform. The even bladed leaf is strange.

JCII #1 is Very close to the JTR's in it's structure. I know Sub bred the JC to get JTR so I guess that's why..... I forgot to take a pic before I cut the top of #2 but it has much more lower growth than #1..

They are all going to slowly heal and hopefully bush out and get to live or die depending on the clone I just took. I got the cloner cleaned the other day and filled it up tonight. I put in some Clonex solution and ph'ed to 6. It took the other's 1 week minimum to show roots and were ready for soil in 2-3 weeks so I'm figuring the same or close for these. Tops don't root as easy as the lower growth but this works better for me if I'm keeping one of the plants to mother from I've already got a bunch of lower growth. I took all the clones at the 6th node leaving the growth and taking everything above it. Into water from the res for a few seconds then slathered with Clonex gel and into the cloner with dome.

The rest of the DQ's, Vortex, and the Snow Dawgs are chugging along. It's a shame I can't flower the SD and Vortex at the same time as everything else. I'm still taking pollen from the Vortex male and will get rid of it tomorrow.
