Hi All

I'm currently building a commercial grow in colorado.

I had the facility designed by a specialist design company. I was a bit dubious becuase they kept trying to sell me their own products.

Anyway, long story short, they say I need 20 ton HVAC for each grow room that has 42 x 277v 630w CMH lights

I've spoken to a few people and they all say that 20 ton seems too much cooling for those lights.

Would love anyones opinion on here please. Is there some kind of formula for working out cooling plus does dehumidification come into it. I think they put uit approximately 105,000 btu in heat. Not sure what other factors come into play.

thanks in advance

I don't really know about sizing AC, but 1 watt = 3.41 BTU. 42 x 630w x 3.41 = 90,228 BTU from the lights. Dehumidifiers and everything else in the room will produce the same 3.41 BTU per watt consumed.

Youd rather have too much ac than not enough, The units can cycle, turn on & off. In the event of an ac failure Ive always used multiples to achieve my needs. If one fails, you can still hang on til the other is repaired. Ive seen people fail using 1 unit per area,if that unit shuts down you could lose the whole crop. I also use ambient exterior air to supplement when the weather is cooler. If the humidity is low enough outside the area ill use that air at lights off to decrease the load on dehu & ac. Theres 100 ways to skin a cat!
