411 on cheap speed controllers

Okay so I was checking out another recent post and doing a little research for my own tent and I came across something I would like some input on.

It seems as though people have been having problems with the inexpensive speed controllers from places like htg or greeners. The cheap units cost around $20 and seem to be causing malfunctions with people's fans. I read somewhere that they work by shutting the fan on and off very quickly thus ruining the motor. Others have said they make the fan put out a loud noise.

I'm investing in a inline fan and was about to get a cheap speed controller but now it looks like a higher end one may be the best bet. Any thoughts by people who have used one or both?

Any suggestions into which higher end controller to get?

Get a VARIAC speed controller ..there a lil but more I forgot the exact name of the thing inside the controller but it won't mess up ur inline fans ..like the speedsters

There's also a cheaper heavy duty router controller that is better than the speedsters
