Is it really worth buying the MH bulb for vegging(will I see much more growth in vegging with MH or barely noticable?) and keeping the HPS for flower, or can you just use HPS all the way through.

No Dope, It is not worth it if i were you I would get hps and buy some cfl's or just use some plain old tubes they work just perfect for veg.

The lumens put off a CFL or 48" are ridiculously low compared to an MH 400w. Yes an HPS would work, but there is a reason people go out of their way to purchase an MH. THe early photo sites on the plant are designed for spring sun which is a bluer color, as such they process that color more efficently. MH of the same wattage will not blow you away compared to an HPS for vegging, but it will produce a bushier tighter noded plant the majority of the time.
