no. the 400 hps is far too powerful for veg growth, plus uses a lot of un needed electricity. just use some cool white(shop lights) u can get those for dirt cheap and they use lots less energy. Organic Miracle grow I have used on tomatos and they have been really good, but on the ganj I couldn't tell ya. and Orguano as I call it, is the only way to go :joint:

I veged under a 400W HPS and it went fine. I just finished veg growth on my next grow and I used a MH conversion buld, bud sites are much closer together than last time so I highly recommend it if you dont want to buy new MH running gear.

You should get a t5 cfl for veg. Saves elect. money makes great veg plants. Couple cfl light bulbs will do for sprout + couple weeks period. you can use hps 400 for total but waste of electric money and too powerfull. Plus if you want to use the t5 and/or cfl for extra light in flower added to the hps you can.

You can definitely grow veg under a 400 hps, my only concern is super young growth (may be too much) and the lack of blue spectrum of light. Both could be remedied with fluorescents with more blueish light bulbs in 'em. You can never go wrong with more lights.....Good luck and let us know it goes. JR

Hey man hows it going, just going to say that I had a 125 watt cfl that I used for the first six days after germination! I have been using my 400 watt hps gavita bulb ever since and let me tell you it does a hell of a job vegging in my opinion, but don't take my word I will attach a pic of my baby she is only 29 days old so been vegging under hps for like 22 days! When I switched to the hps I started four foot above the seedling and each day moved it down a foot till I was as close as I could get without burning her. I say go for it man! Oh and I am using some cheap spotlight cfl's and regular cfl's to help get some light under the canopy, she has a lot of foliage!

Man its not that big of an electric cost to run a 400 watt hps, if you look on this site under electric usage and calculate how much energy it uses per hour and how many hours you use it multiplied by what your electric company charges, on 18\6 photoperiod mine only cost me 16 dollars to run for the month, so why go for small slow growth with a flourescent when the saying is "Grow Big or Go Home"

my experience is about $50 more a month for the hps/fans. Depending on how many plants it might just be a wash. Still like a t5 for veg but I will soon start using the 400 mh bulb for the last couple weeks veg.

The 400 h.p.s can be used all the way through the grow veg/bloom.You want it about a metre above the seedling for the first week. The light then wants to be lowered so it is about 1 ft above the plant, the closer that you can have a light to the plant top the bigger the yeild will be.This is because the internodes will be close and it is from these internodes that the flowers[buds] will form.Make sure that you get a good exaust system and you should grow a good ammount of nugs.I would also get a second room going so that you can take a couple of clones from low down the plant for the next grow all you will need for this is a couple of flouresents 3ft daylight 1 cool and one warm tube.I also have a pair of daylight spec cfl's on each wall of the grow room.Put mylar around the cloneing and the lowering room.A 400 watt h.p.s will do about 2/3 plants if flowered realy small.
