400 watt hps question.

What's up guys, I've been growing for a couple years now with cfl's and I wanna step up my game and get a 400 watt hps. Not anything against cfl's, I've seen some dank plants grown with cfl's on riu but I just haven't gotten the results i wanted. If I got the light do you think there would be a noticeable spike in the electricty bill? I'm trying to keep this on the down low and I'm just a bit paranoid. Thanks guys :weed:

I only notice about $8 to $10 a month, I run at night. It's cheaper, cooler in summer and keeps them warm at night. Plus I changed all the other bulbs to cfls and pay less...rw

If you are using a few CFL lights and then switch to a 400w light you are not going to see much of a difference on your bill. $5 - $10 max. Maybe a little more if you have to add an inline fan.

I run a 400w, fan, and some extra CFL's, and I can't really even notice a difference in my bill compared to last year. Maybe $10 more on some months, but I have had other months when my bill was cheaper than the previous years. I guess it was the mild winter. I don't think 400w makes much of a difference and definitely not enough for the law to notice.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm just a little sketched out I guess. Cops around here have been crackin down on kids lately smoking pot and they are definitely watching (guess they have nothing else to do). Right now I am using 275 watts of cfl's. How many decent size plants would fit under a 400 watt? like 3-5? I'm trying to shoot for 8 oz this grow.

400w light has a footprint of 40"x40" when 8" from the canopy...So, as many as you can fit in there. Depends on the size and width of them.

I tested it a couple times with a high ens light meter that my buddy has. A 400w at those distances of 40x40 still has sufficient lumens and LUX for vigorous plant growth.
What hood are you running? I seem to get significant drop off too far outside the perimeter of the hood. Also, what were the light readings at that distance? My math tells me this only gives about 4500 lumens per sq foot, which seems less than ideal.

Lumens are pretty much useless when talking about the effectiveness of lighting to grow plants. A lumen is only the measurement of visible light and in reality has no bearing on plant growth. Footcandles are a much more accurate way to measure the efficiency of your lighting.

When we did the test we were using Hortilux Super HPS bulbs and Cool Sun 6" reflectors. At 40" from center the footcandle reading was 4100. At 44" it was 2900. 4400 lumens is well within the accepted parameters for growing weed.

Hey brother, I wouldnt worry at all about the electric when your only adding 125 more watts. What is your fan type and size? I have a 400 watt MH and a 4" inline centrifuge fan for exaust. The fan pulls 80 watts. I also have 2 small Air King 2 speed fans for extra movement. They pull about 20 watts each. You could put more than 5 under it brother, dont listen to the haters. I worried about my electric bill at first but now I'm gonna add supplemental light for under the canopy when its time to.
Look up LST Training your plants, its a great way to keep them tighter or shorter or however you need to use your space. Really though, it all depends on your set up and air exchange, nutrients, watering schedule and other environmental factors like humidity and average temp. When they say its all the little things that make a difference, it really is true. All those little things make your bud yield way bigger and way higher quality too.
If you go and look at my pics of my set up you will see that I currently have 20 total under my 400 watts. 18 are Lemon Haze seedlings that are not sexed yet and 2 are larger females of a purple strain that is unknown to me (The 2 seeds came from a bag of some of the frostiest purple bud I have ever seen and my buddy was saying that "This stuff rarely comes around and is called THE PURPLE FROST"). I never told him of the 2 seeds (both were girls obviously and wanted to explode into flower when I flipped for sexing) and I cant wait to give him a nug of that same herb and him look at me like, How did you meet him/her?.
I'm am hoping to get at least 9 females out of the 18 so I plan on finishing 11 total under the 400 watts. I will be adding supplemental lighting for the under canopy also when it is ready for it (pretty soon). Do look at the LST Training if you need to fit a lot more in a tight space or if you want a big yield with limited space. I'm going hydro next grow. Way bigger results for our size grows. At least a 3rd better yield, maybe even double with hydro over dirt.

God bless brother, Happy growings. Peace, J

p.s. RG3 is the man, what a game huh? Pierre-Paul couldnt judge his hip movement for direction on where to meet him with the hard hit. This is rare in a QB and with his other natural ability, I would say he's gonna be breaking records in about 10 years if not sooner. Peace, J

A 400 watt is rated for 5'x5' for effective light, beyond that and its waisting, include Mylar and you increase that bulb to about a 500 watter so just go with what feels and looks right. Every one has their opinion on how far they reach. I have a 4x4x5.5 tall set up with a 400 watt MH in a hydrofarm hood and my stuff is great brother and its beautiful. They all get plenty of light. More than enough. Sometimes you have to play around a bit with the lighting. I would supplement with cfl's that u already have (what are they, Aerogro's?) Just do your best and it will eventually get semi perfected as your grows progress. BTW, what the hell is IMO?
