you will only have problems trying to do it like that my friend, forget about paper towels theres no need for them put your seed directly into a small pot with whatever soil your gonna use to grow. plant it about 1/2 inch down and keep it moist but not water logged and keep a light on above it until it pops, you should see it pop after 2-3 days

IMHO, paper towels all the way. Put them in a ziplock baggie and put the baggie on top of your fridge. 2 to 3 days you'll have roots.

I agree! But I put mine on top the water heater. Also if the beans have a thick shell try some fine sand paper.

I heard that works, but my luck, I'd prolly sand thru the aril!!! You can also try a banana peel in the bag. The Ethylene they produce is supposed to help overcome dormancy. It has sound scientific support.

LOL What I did with my Barney's TD was I got a plastic container that you put food in. Then laid my sand paper down, put my beans in, folded the sand paper over the top and put the lid on it. I shook it very easy for 10 sec or so. I didnt have a problem with anyone of the beans. All had root showing within 48 hours.

I'd have never thought of that. I can see myself sitting there with a bean between my fingers and some 400 grit in the other hand...............

i have a two inch seedling above ground in 48 hours when i plant into soil instead of playing with the seeds

Only reason why I did that was because all I heard about TD was they wouldnt germ. Everything else Ive grown, I started out the ol paper towel method.

i have done the paper towell thing for 25+ yrs, probably had over 95% pop, always make sure the are warm but not hot and make sure it stays moist and doesnt ever dry out

Seeds could also take up to 7-10 days to sprout sometimes too. Be patient. BTW the paper towel method works just as well if not better than other methods imo.

Sand paper inside a matchbox makes the perfect seed scuffer ;-)

....Then I place the seeds inside a folded paper towel on a plate and soak over with plain water (ph-5.9/6.0) or rain water ideally, then I drain off any excess water as you don't want to drown them and then just leave them in moist/warm conditions at all times...

... I just place the soaked seeds & towel inbetween 2 plates and leave them in a warm dark corner of my grow room for a few days makin sure the paper towels don't ever dry out completely...

Once taps are out I then sow them directly into my medium to sprout up proper.

My method here works 98% for me under my conditions, and I usually have a full germ rate in 24-72 hours depending on which strain is grown everytime too.
It takes anything from 24 hours upto 7 days for seeds to crack. So be patient as some are faster than others and as long as your seed is viable it will germ' as long as your conditions are right ;-).

Hope this helps, Stay Up's!!:peace:

paper towel method is so over-rated..throw those beans in some black nursery seed starting cups filled with coco, mist with water n superthrive..throw them in a ziploc keep warm and they will pop..atop a fluoro works great so does a sat dish, but watch out they get hot..no need to touch, move or anything else..BTW i've had several seeds take 14 days before...warmth, moist and patience bro..

Yep. I use the damp paper towel and set it on a saucer, then put a bowl over the saucer and set it on my sattlelight box. However, you should have popped by now....so maybe the seeds are old? It helps to soak old seeds 12 hours in water first, then go to the PT.
f it were me, Id soak em overnight then do PT, saucer and bowl.

good luck

Decaying banana peels give off ethylene. That inhibits dormancy, and can help slow germing seeds pop. (It's true!!) put one under the bowl if you can.

I put my seeds in water for 24 hours. It softens the shell, so it will sprout faster.
Then place in a damp paper towel and put in a baggy.
You should see results in a few days. Keep in a dark place.

so you wait 24 hours in a cup of water, then 36-48 hours in a plastic bag then god knows how long in soil until you have a seedling? why would you even advise people that when you can put a seed in soil under a light and have a seedling out of the soil in 36 hours? am sure your trying to help but when people are new to this its alot easier and alot more fool proof to plant right into soil. the sandpaper idea i have yet to find a seed that needs that treatment but i wouldent advise people just starting to learn to do that at all.

Also the guy is allready using the paper towel method with very poor results i dont think telling him to keep it up when its not working is a great idea.

this is spot on advice,
towels can cause seeds to rot. weed is not a swamp plant, and it dosnt need a monsoon to germinate, just be patient. it can take upto 10 days in soil,
but 2 weeks and i reckon their fucked. putting them in bags on radiators is mental, you can end up cooking the beans, when you boil seed, the white root starts to show through the shell, but it dosnt meen their germinating, their cooked, like clams.
