2nd Grow. Learned a LOT in 2009. Now improving.

Just a week or so more to go and I start germinating some seed. I grew WW, Ice and Crystal last year. Without this site NONE of those plants would have made it.

So, 2010 I'm going to take another go at the same strains plus my bonus strain from marijuana-seed.nl. I'll post later what strain the bonus is; it escapes me now (probably 'cause I'm high off 2009's grow!).

So, here we go, some pics of what I am doing to improve and learn more about this most excellent plant.

First pic is the left overs from the room I used last year. The wood cross bar held my 600w HPS. The walls had 3m reflective poly duct taped to them.

Moving on, the scraping, cleaning and painting with a sealant/anti-bacterial paint. Night and day, literally.

The next pics are of framing in. I am running two new electrical lines to support the 600wHPS, de-humidifier, fans and carbon scrubber.

The green hose you might have caught is a run off for the de-humidifier. Its so I can keep a 5 gallon bucket on the outside of the grow room to collect and not have to worry about changing the collection tank inside while the girls are asleep (note. the de-humidifier will sit on the shelf you saw in a couple of the pics.).

Next up, insulation to the outward bearing walls and then the sheet rock.

The room is now swept clean and I'll be throwing up the mud tomorrow followed by laying up 3M reflective poly and painting the floor with anti-bacterial sealant.

The "window" at the far wall is going to be covered for the time being with 3M. I might re-fit it to be an exhaust/fresh air intake..Still trying to figure how I can do it and conceal at the same time. That side of the house tends to draw attention as it is.

As for the front of this whole contraption; I am going to try and use poly and velcro while the youngin's are sprouting/vegging. If that does not work, I am going to build a door on hinges and seal it with winter "stick on" foam. Coin is still in the air.

The final pic is yours truly. Hope ya don't mind me having a bit of fun with gIMP.

Got the mud up to seal all the seams of the drywall. Nothing fancy. On top of that however, the joint compound I used; I dunno if it was a bad batch, cold or what the deal was. It was setting QUICK! No matter. Next weekend the poly goes up and the front enclosure goes on (not worried about light leak for the next couple weeks while their vegging).

Question for anyone that may peruse this thread. My carbon scrubber is going in next, but not sure where to place it given the current setup. I don't think it would matter either way, but, any helpful hints from others would be appreciated.

Electric, drywall, etc..done. Drywall was covered in back/white 6mm reflective hung by spray mount and overlapping .75in at the seam.
Day 0 for germination. The grow begins!

Alright, so, the spray mount I used for the mylar sucked. Had to revert to stapling the reflective material to the drywall.
The adhesive was made by a company called LOCTITE. Not impressed at all. Will stick with 3M in the future.

Pics to come shortly. Girls have had their first transplant to larger pete pots and should land in their permanent home (3 gallon buckets) in the next week or so.
So far, 24 seeds popped and I have 20 more on order. The above pic is my good strains, I also popped some "bag seed" from my last grow, but couldn't tell you yet which strain they are.

Sixth one is of one my wife's flowers that are soaking in 95000 lumens whilst others around here still have to wait to get their plants going (frost at night). Last year I did not start out with good lighting. This year, I have ;-)
I have a couple mutants again this year. I kinda like them actually. Last years mutant turned out rather well.

Rest are self explanatory...

nice lookin set-up brother!
Thanks Bro! Still more work to be done as I learn more. I am on my second grow so who knows what is in store for me this time. Thankfully, I have this board to lean on ;-)

Bonus! Wife is happy so far with her plants. Asked "What would happen if you added more "big lights"???" ~~Why honey, MORE plants for YOU! (and me; LOL)~~

So the rains that were coming through were all my property could handle water wise. The ground is saturated and the ground water is un-believable this year. The room the plants are in got a good dose of water seepage from the ground water permeating my foundation. Not a hell of a lot of water, but enough that the room was definitely 100% humidity. I have the de-humidifier running at 80% now, but had to crank it full blast to dry out the foundation and mortar. Things are doing better, BUT, the de-humidfier and my efficiency pump probably kicked on at the same time on the same circuit and the plants were without light for three hours or so during the middle of their 16/8 cycle. Hope I didn't trip them early (doubt it, but never know, right?).

They are taking off aggressively in the all Fox Farms soil if not a little wilted over a hard couple days. Certainly, 4.5 days, great soil and 600 watts of HPS have these plants rearing to go!

Wifes plants get moved out after this weekend as our cold snaps should be over by then.

Few pics of their growth...4dayson.jpg3.jpg2.jpgcrys_ice.jpg
First three are as of today, fourth is contrast from just over four days ago...

Now, here is my conundrum. I have 24 plants. I KNOW I'm gonna get around 40% males since these are not feminized (not even sure if those seeds are legit; but I digress). I'm thinking about 1 gallon "grow bags" until I can ID their sex, then move to the three gallon pots I already have laying in wait...What would you do?

So ALL the wifes flowers are out of the room. The strongest plants have been transplanted into 3gallon drums. Started with 24, now down to 14. Un-sure which will be female or male at this point.
My new seeds came in. I will be germ'ing them tonight.
Since the storms a from early last week caused me grief. I had to run the de-humidifier which really put the zap on the young vegging plants. A few of their fan leaves didn't fair so well compounded with my lamp being too close. The pic attached shows the lamp height now. The plants new growth seems okay, so I am not going to sweat some of the leaves that got burned earlier.
Couple of the plants will begin nutes next week. I figure since I made such a mess with nutes on my first grow, I am going to start with two plants on nutes this time and run them roughly 10 days ahead of the rest of my crop. While it is not ideal, for (the still novice) me, it will help in not burning the crap out of everything ;-)

The Rasberry Cough and Mystic Blue from Nirvana popped. Their in larger pete pots now. I read some recent posts about seeds not popping for others. I ordered 20 seeds total, germ'd 4 seed from each. ALL seeds popped and seriously caught me off guard. There were not even into day 3 of germinating and almost all were shedding their seed casing and trying to aggressively root!
As well, some of the plants have already reached the bottom of the three gallon pots and are snaking around (I can see some nice root tips peeking out of drainage holes).
I figure two more weeks and I am going to flip them all to 12/12. The rasberry and mystic seem like they are hardy growers from what I have read. So, I am okay with them budding/flowering a but smaller than the other plants. I already have one Crystal plant that is going to be a problem size wise. It's not "stretched", but an aggressive grower.

Still no clue their sex, no inclination.

Few pics attached. Will take better pics of the plants later tonight.

I should note to (as I did last year). What I am growing is for ME and ME alone. I do not and will not sell Marijuana. I don't even give it away. The only people that know I grow that know me? My wife and that's it. If my area were to legalize Marijuana, I would re-consider within the boundaries of my area's law. For now, mum is the word.
Second note, evidently its bad form to post in other peoples Journal's. Well, feel free to post in mine! Any comments welcome; especially tips from you veterans out there!

Just over a week later. They are taking off pretty good now. Think flowering will start this weekend..
your setup looks pretty good your yield should last you another year!! My plants are a little over 6 weeks old, and my largest plant is 11 inches tall i'm waiting on my grow tent, then flowering begins for me.

Thanks bro!
I still have to go through sexing and figure I will lose at least half my plants as I did last year. I removed one couple days ago. It was bag seed from last year. It simply did not take well to transplanting and I didn't want to take the time to bother. I figure with the 4 rasberry and 4 mystic coming up the rear, I should come out with at least ten females. Anything more and my room will not be able to adequately keep them so, it will be low (wo)man on the totem poll and the bag seed plants get chopped first.

Too bad their isn't a donate your plant to a fellow toker subsidy out there ;-)

Switched them to 12/12. Hopefully I'll know who's who next weekend and can get males out of the mix (and free up some room for ventilation between the plants)...

Two girls ID'd. My "monster" is looking like it might go male; but this is only my second grow, so I'm hoping I am wrong and just in-experienced this early on into flowering. Fresh pics coming in a couple hours.

So my lamp is on its highest tether setting. Look like I'll be damn near mounting on the ceiling by the time is all said and done (better plan for that).
Some plants were real "light", others were mediocre as far as watering goes. I was planning nutes tonight for flowering (first dose); but decided against it as I have some tips that are yellow. No yellow spreading, but I figured they were probably nuted up enough and since I have zero nute burn at this point, no reason to rush things.
Instead, I gave them a nice, slow, good watering trying to get all the soil saturated and I'll be able to probably add VERY lite flower nutes on my next water in three days or so. All in all, where I am at now is FAR BETTER than where I was at last year at this time. I'm actually a good deal ahead since last year I had no clue what I was doing ;-)
One problem however, my veg lamp is kaput. So, I figure fuq it, I'll 12/12 the Rasberry and Mystic. They'll be far smaller plants for sure, but I am going to do everything I can to make them some POTENT shit. Last year I 12/12 some younglings, that caught up pretty good and yielded a nice potent cola each. I can deal with that! ;-)

Couple questions if anyone is reading this.

1) I am currently on 8a to 8p light cycle. If I want to switch that to say 10a to 10p, will the extra two hours of darkness have any bearing on the plant sex?

2) I am still at 80% humidity. I have read I should remain so until I see first trichs. In YOUR growing experience, what was a good humidity level once trichs started appearing? I forgot to note my settings last year. Thanks all!
