A 250watt hps in a 2 foot hight by 1 foot deep by 1 foot wide box with a fan to put fresh air and a exhasut fan wich is a computer case fan placed near the top. My question is would it give out to much heat? If i put a 2nd exhaust fan and mounted the ballast outside the box will it be ok or too hot? There is a possiblity to make the box higher but it its too small how much higher would it need to be for the temp to be ok?

That sounds like the box is barely big enough for the light to even fit. I would expect that you would burn the hell out of anything you tryed to put in there. If you did get something to grow, it would have to be insanely small so that it didn't grow into your light. Does your light have a reflector? Is the reflector vented? In my opinion for that size light, you should have at least a 3-3.5 ft tall box, and prolly more like 2x2 then 1x1. With good air flow, and small plants you might be ok.

I agree with thundercat. 3.5ft

To op: LST like crazy and you might be alright with that box. I really suggest trying to expand the space.

The good thing about small closet grows is that heat can be managed for less cost than a larger room. I guess your gonna have to test and find out.
