240Volt Electrical Receptacles Styles

So I just picked up 5x1000watters with lumatek ballasts and everything is 240v. I'm fairly proficient with electrical so stealing my unused dryer circuit isn't a problem. The problem is where the hell do you find the outlets with two horizontal poles? I don't want to hack the cords off and Home depot/Lowe's only seems to carry receptacles with a single horizontal pole. I can even seem to find the proper name for these things - that may help.

Funny, I'm doing the exact same thing. I was just at Home Depot and after I spent about 5 min. looking I found the 240v plugs. All they had were the single receptacle style so you would have to buy 5 of them and they were not where i would have expected them to be.

If you have a local electrical supply house they would surely have them.

Good luck

Depending on what you need 3 wire 240v plug or a 4 wire plug if you plan on splitting the 2 hots between a neutral say for a 120v fan or something. use #10 wire to ateast the first light. your house is prob. only 220v=22.7 amps if you are plugging in all 5 lights with one plug be sure to get 30 amp. I reccomend you get twist locks to prevent accidental disconnection.

receptacles/plugs aren't just rated in volts they are also rated in amps. Most (if not all) household appliances that use 120v need a 15A outlet. This is your standard outlet with two verticle lines. When you pick a 240 outlet you must also look at the current rating. For example your unused dryer circuit might be a 50A outlet when the ballasts require a 30A. The plug/outlet will be different even though they are both 240V. I could be wrong but I think this might be the problem.

I've got a dedicated 110v circuit in the grow and the 220v is rated for 30A. I'm not too concerned with the load there as I know for sure I wont be adding any other devices. I just prefer to have duplex outlets as I rent and can't make a lot of unnecessary changes.

I did find out these receptacles are referred to as a NEMA 6-20 style and Lowe's carries cord ends. I guess at the least I can make a breakout box with a twistlock - just more work and money than I had planned on.

http://www.google.com/products < This is seriously the easiest way to find virtually ANYTHING you're looking to buy, if the first link wasn't helpful I'm sure you can find something here.
Yep that would be it but I actually wanted duplex style with 2 outlets. Apparently Leviton and Hubbell make them but looks like its probably a supply house only item.

I had tried google... but of course when you don't know the name it makes your search 10x harder. I was really wanting to find them locally though. I can wire up a box in an hour, with the weekend coming up it'd take forever to ship something.

Hydrofarm.com sells them and they are a supplier to almost all hydro stores they could order a couple for you if they don't have them in stock. Part# BA52240
