Plants are not like a ni-cad battery. They are like humans, a carbon based life form that takes in a certain amount of fuel before it has to expel it by some means of energy transfer. So since our planet hasn't evolved around a 48 hour light cycle then that idea won't work. It might for a short peroid but like you they will eventually give up and be so exausted, then die.
It used to be said that 24 hour veg' was pointless as plants could only photosynthesise for 18 hours max'... I think it was Jorges Cervantes who was the biggest shouter of this 'fact'.
Although I think I agree that giving a longer light cycle will cause the plant to reveg' itself. I was thinking hard about this when a sudden memory occurred to me.
I remember force flowering some feminised grapefruit. I gave them a 24 hour light period by mistake... the pistils that were there went brown, and flowering was delayed for around 3 weeks. Nightmare, how could I forget.
