read all the pages w/ great interest, scoping sites for next year same state, same red clay. I think you did great and i know what that work is like hauling gear water- hell hauling yourself out there. Did you ever hear 'copters? Also did you start indoors and if so which light system did you use?
Thanks and enjoy the fruits of your considerable labor.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind sentiments.

Only saw one copter this year. I had video of it, but I must have deleted it in a fit of paranoia one day. I'll put it up again at the end of the season.

The red clay is a formidable foe. If I were to try planting here again, I'd use raised boxes off the ground. I noticed that with time and lots of water, the ground gets soft enough for roots to penetrate (I had it happen with my 5-gallon buckets this year).

Raised beds/boxes would give the plants good size, provide adequate drainage, provide elevated protection from ground living bugs, and keep the roots cool; as opposed to growing in buckets which get hot sitting in the sun all day.

I started outdoors directly in the ground at first, lost 60% mostly due to deer, and in early June, gave up working in the ground and went to buckets.

Removed the girls from their shelters, and I'm happy to report they are no worse for wear.

One of the G13/Haze cola's bent down as it was pressed against the top of the tarp, and one other branch snapped off on another (very small branch), but other than that the plants were fine. One other G13/Haze was exposed to the brunt of the rain and looked wet, but everything else was bone dry.

I'm really impressed the tarps/pine tree shelter worked, and that they stayed dry.

Well here are the videos of the two strains:

I don't use anything for insects; this late in the flowering process I just don't feel good about it.

As I've said in the last 4-5 pages I've had a major caterpillar problem on 4 of my best Sour Diesels. This, after coming back from being away for almost 2 weeks without seeing them.

So what remains is 4 1/2 ounces of curing buds, harvested probably 4 weeks before they were actually ready. It's of mid-grade at best quality, and smokes rather harsh despite slowly drying and curing. It's still early in the curing process, but it's gonna be very mid-grade weed. Smells great though.

A few buds off a branch (broke during the transporting of buckets from the shelter back to their normal spots) are drying right now in the dark, and they smell insanely good. It's G13/Haze. It's almost a fruity smell, really surprised me.

Point is, I don't seem to have much of a problem with bugs. The buckets are up almost a full foot or so off the ground, and that's a nice physical barrier from insects/bugs/etc. Bugs can craw up there, as the ants do, but for the most part, they leave the plant alone.

I haven't seen a fan leaf on any of the plants since the middle of August. The yellowing on the remaining leaves is because the root balls are super saturated with water. Soil is still very moist, so I won't and haven't watered it. It's just that time of the year, and the plant is dying, however slowly.

Still don't know when I'll pull these. The hairs are pink, slowly turning red, and the triches could probably go another few weeks.

I wanna wait. As Fdd says, the plant will tell you.

Had to put the 6 ladies under the tarp/pines once again. Serious weather in the next 24 hours. Should be nice after this, but I felt this storm would reek havoc on the buds.

Here's another out-of-breath video of me huddling the ladies under the tarp:

The plants look good, a little beaten up, but they've been through a lot in the last 3 days.

I did lose the top 5 inches of one G13/Haze cola, and 3 inches off of another G13/Haze cola. Both were broken by being put under tarps two different times. I took both tops that broke home with me, and I'm drying them right now:

The three Sour Diesel look great; 2 of them almost look ready to harvest. Maybe on Sunday, not sure. I kinda wanted to wait as long as I could into October before harvesting.

There's always weather, cops, rippers, and animals/bugs that you have to worry about, but I want the most potent bud that this strain can squeeze out.

Here are the pics:

Really? I have six plants man, that's it.

You have no idea how old I am. Some days, I don't know how old I am, I'll give you that.

I had someone ask me how old I was the other day and I had to think about it. That's funny, I thought I was the only one that forgets how old he is.

Well once I stopped getting carded had no need to keep that info on tap. Sub'd it for growing knowledge... LOL

I just saw the best 10-day forecast for my neck of the woods.

Sunny with no rain everyday, mid to lower 70s.

I'm sorry to gloat, it's just that I've been through a lot this year, and letting these plants finish to their full potential (in good weather) is a miracle if I can get it.

To think it was in the mid 90s not more than a week ago!

I'll be checking things out at the plot soon, and I'll be sure to provide as good of a visual update as possible. :weed:

you are doing well. glad to see some solid plants coming out of this summers ridiculous heat and the poop read clay.
Hey thanks Single Speed!

I'll be doing raised boxes next year, so hopefully that'll help things. The roots will be cooler in that box than in the buckets, it gets great drainage, and the plant is raised off the ground, protecting from some ground-based insects.

If anyone wants to grow in South Carolina, I'd recommend raised beds of some sort. You just get zero drainage from the clay here, even if you replace the soil. Eventually, the water when it rains or when you water has to go somewhere, and the clay here just holds the water like a jug, drowning and suffocating the roots.

The thing about the temps is that as long as the plants get plenty of airflow (and water obviously), they can handle high heat. No indoor grower would ever attempt to grow plants in a 90+ degree environment (without built-in ventilation). Out in the bush, where there is so much natural airflow, big heat doesn't weigh down the plants as badly as it would indoors.

But saying all of the that, I'm still relieved that they made it through the heat!

Went out to check on the ladies today. Things looked good; no cats or insects buried in the buds, and no bud-rot.

I think the plan is to harvest the 3 Sour Diesel sometime next week, and the 3 G13/Haze a week or so later. The Sour Diesel could have been picked today, but I decided to give it another week. The weather is gonna be just perfect for weed the next 10 days here, so I thought why not give it another week at least to add some more weight.

Just have to worry about rippers and pigs now.

Looking good. The plants that have lost all their fan leaves look ready to harvest, i'm sure standing next to them gives you a better perspective though.

It's funny you mention building raised beds, i've been clearing out dead bamboo from a patch the last few days. I've been cutting it into pieces and lashing it together to create some beds for next year. I agree that it's the best way to do it with all the clay.

Well the Sour Diesel was supposed to finish in early October, so it is right in line with that time-line. I could harvest this week, but since the weather is going to be so agreeable and free of rain, I decided to give it one more week, so the resin can continue to swell.

The G13/Haze would benefit the most from waiting. It's time-line to finish was projected at late Sept., early October, so the G13/Haze is a little behind it's projections.

The G13/Haze smells just great; so hard to describe but its a light and fruity/spicy like smell that's almost lemony. Really wish I had more females this year; maybe next year.

If I wouldn't have dewarfed one of my G13/Haze by trying to genetically produce feminized seeds, it would be 3-4 times the size it is now. Next year, normal seed breeding for me.

Here are two videos of each:

That's cool you're gonna give raised beds a go next season. We have a lotta bamboo, and it's would work perfectly for it. Great idea!

You trim up like that too?
I did it and everyone scolded me saying NOOOO! But I wanted to give my buds light for the last 3-4 weeks of budding.

It's just one more week, and I think it'll be good for the buds.

You're always thinking about the plants though, what could interact with them and impact them negatively/positively. With all the dry weather in the forecast, and low humidity, the buds can continue to grow and mature unimpeded.

Getting pumped to see the plants!

Gonna harvest the 3 Sour Diesel in a few days, then take the 3 G13/Haze a few days after that.

The G13/Haze still had white hairs here and there on it, while the Sour Diesel hairs have turned dark red weeks ago. It's funny because the two were supposed to have completely different finish times. Haha, that's the fun of finding the right phenotype, which will be part of next years projects.

Major breeding gonna happen next year. I probably won't try breeding feminized seeds again, unless I have an abundance of females next year, just regular seed breeding.

Strains I would like to breed next year:

1. Short Rider
2. Juicy Fruit
3. Mango
4. Big Bud

Neither of this years strains would be able to finish in the Midwest's environment (maybe this year they would have, but most years they wouldn't). It's just as well that any breeding attempt on my part failed this year.

Anyway, looking forward to cutting down the girls, and putting them in my newly put together drying space. Duct tape is a wonderful thing. :-)
