08/08/10 continued

09/08/2010

  • Today I started to flush Mary, I’m not 100% sure if she’s ready for a flush as ive got no previous experience to go on, however I’ll flush her for a week and if her development isn’t what I want it to be I’ll put her back on nutes for a week or so. Both plants were given 800ml of water from the top and 300ml of water from the bottom.
  • Still a lot of white pistils on both plants, a lot still on Mary. By now I was expecting them to have all changed colour but hopefully more will do so this week.
  • Jane’s main cola is starting to show her first orange pistils.
  • Temperatures a little cooler today, with lights off temp 22C and lights on temp 25C.

10/08/10

  • Again Mary was fed over a litre of water today in an attempt to slowly flush out the nutes left in the soil. Initially I was going to leech her at the start of the week, however I want to slowly deprive her of nutes so will feed her only water this week and potentially leech her on Sunday, depending on her progress.
  • Jane is still on the nutes and was fed a usual feeding of 400ml of nutes mixed with 300ml of water from on top, and 100ml of nutes followed by 250ml of water from the bottom.
  • Few leaves were removed as they’d turned completely yellow and would be no further use to the plant.
  • Again good development on the orange pistils on Jane’s main cola. On Mary’s main cola I’d estimate about half the pistils have changed from white to orange. Now I’m waiting for them to recede back into the bud.
  • Temperatures cooler than last week ranging between 22C lights off and 25C lights on.

11/08/2010

  • Mary again was fed 800ml of water from on top and 300ml from below. Jane was fed 700ml of water from the top and 250ml of water from the bottom. I realise I should probably be feeding the bigger plant more water, however I feel this is the right amount for Jane. The only reason I’ve increased the water given to Mary is due to the flush. However I feel this could potentially be too much as the pot isn’t drying up enough for my liking between waterings.
  • The flush seems to be doing its job, as the leaves on Mary’s main cola have begun to turn slightly yellowish.
  • Buds from what I can tell are continuing to swell nicely.
  • Jane’s main cola is starting to firm up a bit.
  • Again further fan leaves were removed today due to full on yellowing.
  • Plants really are starting to stink every time I open the cupboard doors.

12/08/2010

  • Today I decided to reduce Mary’s watering to 700ml from top and 200ml of water from the bottom. The reason for this is due to the soil not drying up quick enough, im guessing this is to do with the cooler temperatures outside this week and therefore cooler temperatures in my cupboard. The plants are obviously not as thirsty.
  • Jane was again fed the usual feeding of 400ml of nutes mixed with 300ml of water from on top, and 100ml of nutes mixed with 250ml of water from below.
  • Jane’s main cola is slowly starting to change colour now, and Mary’s is already quite orange.
  • Same temps today as previous days.
  • Open the cupboard about an hour after watering to check on the plants to find a small spider climbing up the side. Luckily it hadn’t reached my plants yet so was removed, but how it got inside is a mystery…
  • Few leaves are being removed on a daily basis now on both plants.

13/08/2010

  • Both plants were fed 700ml of water from top and 200ml of water from below.
  • Leaves continue to turn yellow and are removed.
  • Temperatures still cool between 22C and 25C.
  • I’m considering removing the 2 lowest branches on Mary to hang up and dry at the end of this week to test the buds, not for the taste as I realise it wudnt’ve developed yet, but for the high. I’m seriously considering harvesting one plant slightly early, i.e when the trichomes are predominantly cloudy for a more head high, and harvesting the other plant when the trichomes are amber for a more body high. I will probably end up doing this as long as I don’t sacrifice the taste by not letting the buds fully ripen. However I think even in their current stage of development if I were to dry and cure them properly they’d come out amazing. But after 4 months I don’t know if I want to bother risking it. Any advice?

14/08/2010

  • Again Mary was fed 700ml of water from above and 200ml of water from below, whilst Jane was fed her usual nute feeding of 400ml of nutes mixed with 300ml of water from ontop, and 100ml of nutes mixed with 250ml of water from below.
  • I’m pretty much making a new mix of nutrients every feeding now.
  • Temperatures still cool at 22-25C.
  • More leaves were removed today.
  • The development of Jane’s main cola is more evident in today’s pictures.
  • Many more leaves are starting to turn yellow on Mary. She’s not as developed as I’d like her to be, and so I’m starting to think maybe I started flushing a week or 2 early. I think I’ll continue with plain water feedings until Monday and start her back on nutes for a week, before beginning to flush again. This is the last thing I wanted to do but I’d rather have an inconsistent feeding schedule in the last couple weeks of the plants life than harvest early and have bud that hasn't fully matured. The extra wait will always be worth it.

15/08/2010

  • Both plants were fed 700ml of water from top and 200ml of water from below.
  • Temperatures same as previous days.
  • Further leaves are yellowing on Mary and will be removed in the next couple of days.
  • The orange pistils on some of Mary’s buds are starting to retreat into the buds so I’m guessing I’m nearly there. I’ll probably harvest her in about 2 weeks from today, and leave Jane going on for a while longer yet.
  • The lower buds on Jane are a lot more developed than the main cola, although she’s slowly getting there.
  • The pistils are turning into a much deeper orange than expected.

  • Today I gave Mary her first nutes in a week, feeding her 400ml of nutes mixed with 300ml of water from on top, and 100ml of nutes mixed with 100ml of water from below. I didn’t want to feed her any more as the pot already felt relatively heavy before watering. For this reason I won’t water her tomorrow and will let her completely dry out before a next feeding.
  • Jane was fed 400ml of nutes mixed with 300ml of water from above and 100ml of nutes mixed with 250ml of water from below.
  • Some of the leaves on Mary’s main cola’s have yellowed to the point where they’ve shrivelled up. These were quickly removed as I didn’t want dead leaves to start moulding or anything in the wet sticky environment they’re in, causing bud rot. Don’t know if that would actually happen but it seems possible to me.
  • Jane too had a couple shrivelled up leaves that were quickly removed.
  • You can clearly see the difference in development between Mary and Jane’s main cola, with Mary’s looking a lot more matured, and Jane’s looking less dense, less developed, and more generally more airy.

17/08/2010

  • Neither plant was watered today to let them dry out. Something Ive begun to worry about is root rot, so from now on if the pots aren’t light I wont water. As important as I think it is to stick to a regular feeding schedule, I think its more important to read your plants and adapt as necessary, something I’m trying to slowly learn and get the hang of.
  • As neither plant was watered, I felt no reason to remove the plants, and therefore pictures are taken in the cupboard.
  • Temperatures have been cool again, looks like the hot summer days are over. Temps same as previous days.
  • More leaves were removed today, more on Mary than Jane. I’m hoping Mary doesn’t keep losing too much foliage, as already I’ve had to remove a few fan leaves from her main cola. Obviously the more leaves the better so I’m hoping reintroducing nutes this week will prevent any further leaves from dying off.
  • A lower branch of Mary was today cut off and hung up to dry. This branch was not a main branch and had very little bud on it. Probably held the smallest bud on the plant. I want to quick dry it and have a little taster tomorrow to see how she’s getting along. This is to test the high, not the taste, as I realise this bud wouldn’t have ripened yet.

18/08/2010

  • Both plants were fed around a litre of fresh water today. As Mary hadn't been fed yesterday she was pretty thirsty, and absorbed the water fast. Jane seemed even more thirsty, maybe due to her size, and although she could've maybe done with a bigger watering than Mary, i want to avoid getting the soil as saturated as it previously was.
  • Temps same as previous days.
  • Again more leaves were removed from both plants, but not many.
  • The bud I previously dried was smoked. Although still very very slightly wet in the middle of the bud, it smoked well, very smooth, very clean, just no real taste. Tasted very planty, but i'm surprised it burnt as well as it did.

19/08/2010

  • Both plants were fed nutes today, usual amounts of 400ml nutes mixed with 300ml of water from on top and 100ml nutes followed by 250ml of water. I will continue to feed Mary for the rest of this week, and then leech her on sunday, let her dry out, and continue feeding plain water from then on till harvest.
  • Temperatures are pretty consistent these days, never dropping below 21C and never going above 26C. Although this is a little cooler than I would like, the plants seem to be thriving. Lower temperatures also mean lower chance of mould which i'm paranoid about, so i'll leave it all as it is.
  • The buds are definitely swelling, with the calyx's on the buds protruding out noticeably. This is equally evident on both plants, maybe more so on Jane as her buds are generally bigger.
  • I was under the impression these plants would stink by now, however I've found the outside of the buds don't smell as strong as i imagined they would. I'm sure once its dried and cured nicely, once ground up it'll be more pungent.
  • More of Mary's lower branches were trimmed off. This is because the buds are so small i don't want her to waste her energy developing these tiny little nugs, when she could be putting that energy into the bigger juicier buds.

  • Both plants were fed around a litre of luke warm water today, 700ml from above and 250ml from below.
  • Temperatures seem to be consistent these days, ranging from 22C to 25C during the course of the day.
  • Few leaves were stripped off both plants, only the worst went.
  • I've had no internet for the past couple months hence why i stopped updating the journal. I have actually harvested now and have nearly finished getting through all 2 plants. I aim to complete this journal so don't worry. It will get done eventually.

21/08/2010

  • Today I left Mary to dry as I felt she didn’t need a watering judging by the weight of the pot. Also I plan to flush her tomorrow and this would be better achieved with dry soil. Jane however was fed her usual amount of nutes.
  • A further 2 branches were removed from Jane, they were pretty much budless.
  • The top leaves of Jane have also begun to yellow and therefore some were removed/trimmed.

  • Mary was flushed today whilst Jane was fed her usual dosage of nutrients/water.
  • Leaves are still yellowing slowly on both plants and I find myself trimming/removing leaves on a daily basis now, not huge amounts at a time but if things carry on the way they are the plants will have very few leaves before harvest, especially Jane.
  • Again more consistent temperatures of between 22C and 25C.

  • After yesterdays flush Mary still seemed pretty heavy and therefore was left to dry out. Jane on the other hand was given 750ml of water from above and 250ml of water from below.
  • Few leaves stripped off both plants.
  • Buds continue to swell, especially on Jane. I don’t know how well you can see in the pictures.
  • I now plan to harvest Mary roughly a week today. I have no idea if this is too early due to my inexperience however I plan to let Jane go for another 3-4 weeks so I guess I’ll know once both are harvested and cured.

24/08/2010

  • Again Mary was still quite heavy and therefore again was not fed. Maybe the plants aren’t taking up as much water due to the cooler temperatures in the cupboard. Jane however was fed her usual nutes and took them up nicely.
  • More leaves stripped although only a few from all over both plants.
  • Jane’s main cola is still continuing to swell, looking juicy and damn sticky.

25/08/2010

  • Mary now completely dried out, was given a litre of water from on top only. This was done as a precaution as I didn’t want the bottom of the soil sitting wet for days on end and after the flush it had been. I think from now on I’ll water Mary only from on top. Jane however was fed 700ml of water from above and 300ml of water from below.
  • I pulled a trichome covered leaf off the main cola of Mary and from what I can see it looks like a lot of trichs have begun turning amber. From the leaf I pulled it looked to be as much as 50/50 but I’m sure this ratio is not consistent around different parts of the plant. My magnification isn't amazing, i'm using a keyring magnifying scope so its hard to see anything. My observations could be wrong.
  • Temperatures still steady at between 22-26C

26/08/2010

  • Mary was today fed 700ml of water from ontop, as I felt she still had a bit of weight to her. Jane however was fed her full dosage of usual nutrients/water, however she was unable to suck up all the water from the plate at the bottom, so I’ll consider reducing her daily feeding.
  • Yellowing still evident on both plants and therefore leaves were stripped off in accordance.

27/08/2010 - A sad day...

  • A close inspection after splitting open the main cola a little revealed mould growing in the middle of both the main cola’s working its way out. I can’t say I’m not surprised due to the sheer size of them. I can easily understand how the mould must’ve formed, due to the damp conditions near the stalk inside the buds, and the lack of fresh air circulation deep inside the buds. From what I can see, I believe this to have been due to the size of the cola's, and the lack of a fan blowing on them. As a result of this mould I’ve been forced to cut off the heads of my ladies. I will try and salvage as much as I possibly can from this, however I do not want to be smoking any mouldy mud. The mould seen looks like white fuzz. I’ve tried getting pictures of it. Although I did notice this a while back, as it was spreading from the middle, clear evidence of mould didn’t surface until it had reached the outside of the cola. Also although I did consider what I saw a while back to be mould, my inexperience stopped me from taking any action and i didn't want to break open the main cola's for no reason. Hopefully others will learn from my mistakes...
  • Buds with spaws on it were immediately thrown away, the rest that was salvageable was hung up to dry. After it has dried all buds will again be closely inspected before being put in jars to cure as I don’t want the mould spreading again whilst the buds are curing.
  • If you look back at pictures from previous weeks of the main cola's you can actually see this mould slowly surfacing, look for the brown patches with hints of white fuzz.
  • I've got a lot more pictures of this mould, i'll include them all in a separate post at the end of this journal.
  • Both plants were not fed today as I felt they could last another 24hrs without more water.

28/08/2010

  • Both plants were today fed a litre of fresh water.
  • More bud has had to be removed from the top of both plants, just as a precaution, and because I found parts of these top buds to be slightly mouldy.
  • Yesterday I cut the cola’s off with a pair of scissors, however this was not the cleanest cut by any means. Therefore today I went back to the area of stalk I cut and cleanly sliced it with a sharp razor at a 45 degree angle, think I read something about cutting at a 45 degree angle when topping… i duno

29/08/2010 - HARVEST OF MARY

  • Today I decided to harvest Mary. Whether this was too early or not we shall see. I decided to cut all her branches off and hang them up to dry, leaving the main thick stalk standing in the soil. This will enable me to easily see the roots of the plants once the soil dries up a little and compacts.
  • Jane was not fed today as I felt she didn’t need a feeding

  • Today I started Jane’s 2-3 week flush. I plant to water only for the next week, leech her on the weekend in the bath tub, and then continue feeding her water only until I decide to harvest. As she was not watered yesterday she was very thirsty today and was given 1litre of fresh luke warm water. Her leaves had even began to start withering slightly due to lack of water.
  • I added a fan to the drying area today to circulate the air. When it comes to drying and curing Jane, this shall all be done in my cupboard, as currently im having to dry Mary around my room which is stinking.
  • Judging from the condition of the roots as can be seen in the pictures, i'm assuming watering from both on top and below was a good idea, as the roots have grown very evenly throughout the soil, and very densely, yet there is no evidence of overcrowding or the plant being root bound.

31/08/2010

  • Jane was given her usual watering today of around a litre.
  • A lot of leaves seem to be showing signs of a deficiency now, yellowing around the edges and browning a little in the middle on some leaves. Due to the age of this plant I’m not worrying about this as I believe this is completely natural. Unhealthy leaves will be removed from the environment as they degrade.
  • From what I can see there seem to be a fair few amber trichs on the leaves, with the buds looking amazingly frosty and swollen. I now see what people mean when they say in the final 2 weeks the calyx will swell.
  • Mary is still hanging and drying. She will be my test plant in terms of drying and curing, and hopefully by the time i come to do Jane i'll know the best way to go about the harvest.

01/09/2010

  • Mary is still drying, Jane is being fed only water from now on until i harvest her. From now on i will be posting pictures only unless i feel something needs mentioning, as aside from the swelling of the calyx and change in colour of the bud as it ripens, there's not too much to report on!

Oh mannnn, that sucks about the mold, looks like there could've been a good ounce on that one alone!

Good work on cutting it all out though, people get reallly frickin ill after smoking mouldy bud.

  • Jane was given a thorough flushing today, see below.

ILLUSTRATION OF MY METHOD OF FLUSHING AND THE NUTE CONTENT OF THE SOIL BEFORE AND AFTER:

* Raise the pot in the tub by placing it on top of an open container or something (so you can catch the water that runs through and out the holes at the bottom and check its colour/PH)

* I found using a watering can to pour water over the soil was the best way to flush. If you use your shower hose, the pressure of the water is too strong and as it hits the soil it compacts it and disturbs the roots on top. You want to be gentle, which is best achieved using a watering can. Initially in previous flushes i used a shower hose and noticed after 5-10 minutes the soil level had dropped a noticeable amount. The soil was more compact and as a result took longer to drain. Also this meant less air in the pot, therefore less air reaching the roots.

* Below is the colour of the water that came out the bottom of my pot after the first few minutes of flushing Jane. As you will see the more water poured through the pot, the more nutrients get drained out, and the lighter in colour the orange nutrient-y water becomes. A good proper flush took me around 20-25mins, i ran A LOT of water through the pot to flush out as much as possible.

* After a while...

*After a lil while longer...

* Getting there..

* Some of Mary's dried bud in temporarily jars

08/09/2010

  • Jane not watered today for obvious reasons, infact she wont be watered for a few days now.
  • Her time is coming to an end, she's looking extremely bare with hardly any full leaves left.

Smoke report (JANE)

Strain: Super Lemon Haze (GSC)

Grow Info: Soil, 400W MH/HPS, HESI Nutrients + Organic B + Liquid silicon

Dry Time: 1 Week

Cure Time: 1-2-3 Months

Bag Appeal: - Sadly police got a hold of some of this and even they were surprised at how much this bud stunk, even their supposed *air tight* evidence bags wouldn’t keep the smell locked in and whilst they took my details it was busy stinking up the station! The buds were kept in airtight mason jars, which were a pleasure to open as they truly locked in the smell.

Smell: This stuff was EXTREMELY smelly, a decent size bud would very quickly and very easily stink out a large room in seconds with a distinctly beautiful lemony citrus smell, especially when a bud was cracked open. Very overpowering. Its scent appeared early on and only got better and stronger throughout the grow.

Taste: Honestly the taste wasn’t quite as sweet and potent as the super lemon haze I had in Amsterdam (I reckon this is down to the 2 pheno’s I got my hands on), however it was still a delicious smoke. In an attempt to get the best taste out of these plants I let them mature as long as I could afford to and gave them a very thorough flushing. Apparently there are quite a few different pheno’s of super lemon haze going around. Quite often I get bored of a particular taste of a strain after smoking a lot of it, but this was not the case with this super lemon haze, I could smoke this all day everyday period. The taste is a skunky, citrus-y taste, that is amazing on the inhale and even better on the exhale. The longer I cured this bud the better it tasted, all the way down to the last zoot I smoked of it.

Smoke: Smooth and almost buttery if you know what I mean. The longer I cured it the smoother the smoke, however this was pretty damn smooth right from the start, definitely not one that grips your throat if rolled correctly. The smell of a smokey room took me straight back to being in the GreenHouse coffee shop in Amsterdam. Put it this way, you didn’t need to see the bud, smell the bud, or even smoke any of it to realise the quality. The smell it left behind spoke volumes.

Effects: Very uplifting, a strong sativa head high, smoke enough of this and you will end up staring into space, forgetting all about the spliff in your hand… before slowly feeling more and more lethargic. For those who hardly ever smoke, a couple hits on a spliff of this will give you an almost drunken high, where the world will spin and basic things will become a struggle. It is potent!

Final Thoughts: This still is and will always be one of my favourite strains out there, nothing anywhere near as good as this is available commercially in my area so mission accomplished. It’s a pleasure to grow, might take longer than other strains but its character make it worth it. Definitely will be growing this again with the left over seeds I have. The Super Lemon Haze I had in Amsterdam blew my bud out the water, but hopefully next time I’ll get yet another pheno with slightly different qualities.
