A series of explosions in the skies of Russia's Urals region, reportedly caused by a meteor shower, has sparked panic in three major cities. Witnesses said that houses shuddered

According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers, local newspaper Znak reports quoting a source in the military.

The incident in Chelyabinsk bears a strong resemblance to the 1908 Tunguska event – an exceptionally powerful explosion in Siberia believed to have been caused by a fragment of a comet or meteor.

(which leveled over 900 sq miles of forest)

I read somewhere, that if the Earth were 7-8 minutes ahead in it's orbit, the Astroid would have hit Earth... 420 seconds ahead, and D14 would have impacted ... Maybe the Myans were off by just a little on there orbit calc's....

It was 15 mins off the orbit.. and it has not passed yet.. the issue now is what the heck maybe in the grav pull of this larger astroid.. have seen some nice long trails of shooting stars this am (in Cen Cal)

this shit should concern us all. as we argue stupid economics and silly social issues, chasing the almighty dollar and worrying whats after this life, a rock with our end date is out there, heading toward us. its coming. its only a matter of time....and yet nothing will be done to even try to prevent it. we are gonna keep our minds on the nasdaq, waterbottles, gun control, floating portapotties, the next big dance craze, which black guy kim kardashian is fucking this month, who is bombing who over which god is real etc. its so fucking stupid.

I dont think it's all that concerning.. the science community "thinks" it has ideas.. but those are decades perhaps centuries off in technology.

We know we have over 9000 NEO's of that 1100 are worry some.. we know we have been hit in the past.. and will be hit again and again..

lets not take the time to worry about crap that MAY happen while we still have crap here that IS happening..

i worry about our planet. visiting meteor crater in az as a kid opened my eyes. theres very big, very scary rocks out there. im not dissing you at all goiua, but i think thats small thinking and its why we do not have a space program anymore. people believe there are more important things, but dont think of what came out of the last space race, microwaves, cellphones, microchips, etc. if i were bill gates i would devote my resources to building a vessel that could mine asteroids, hollow them out with tunnels, put some ion motors on them, nuke reactors, provisions, small crew, set them to spin for artificial gravity, and place them into postions outside of our moons orbit with small engines to place on incoming threats far enough out to change the trajectory. yeah, its a crazy fantasy, not like the threesome fantasy that most dudes entertain, but hey, its mine...its what i think about when kim kardashian is on flaunting her smelly vag.

Not sure if it is still going, but there was a govt. funded program at NASA to watch for large (>1/2 mile diameter) meteors that might strike Earth.

there is, and a small number of amatuer astronomers looking too. the Da14 or whatever it is was discovered only a year ago by some amatuers in spain.
