1st Grow... Working with what I got!

Ok, most likely your only gonna get 3 females, so if you want to increase your yeild, check this out - http://www.seaofgreen.co.uk/advice/default.asp?active_page_id=427
Topping is an option, but the stress will set your plants back at least a week. Irrigation systems aren't really worth your time with less than 10 plants imo. Though having a water butt with an airstone, hose etc maight be if you already got one. Next.. Plan ahead! Wheres your next harvest coming from? And how long can you wait for it? The answers to this are cuttings, once you have used LST (bending technique) to get 4 main branches (and a week before you flower) take 2 cuttings off each plant from the bottom. Cuttings need about 2 sets of leaves and 1"+ pf stem to work. Use clean, sharp scissors, and cut the stem at a 45o angle to increase surface area. Then dip them in rooting gel or powder, and put them into rockwool, or a nice perilite and compost mix. Use a small propogator if you are unable to keep humidity in the veg area around 70%. And don't let them get closer than 6" to the lights until they start to grow. Label these cuttings, so you know what plant they came from and you can throw away the ones that are males as soon as you know. Now, relating to what i said earlier about sealing of your veg area, also make it light proof, Though don't forget to have some way of getting fresh air in there, and a small oscilating fan for circulation and to strgthen the young plants. The reason you sould make it light proof, is that you can then use the rest of the room as a flowering room, without disturbing the 12/12 light cycle of the flowering plants. This way, while your current plants are flowering, your next crop will be getting ready in the veg area, you can top these ones, as slowing them down doesn't matter so much cos you got 8 weeks till they need to replace the plants that will be in flower. This way as soon as you chop one lot of plants, the next are ready to flower, so your next havest will be 8 weeks later instead of 12+. Theres alot more to say, about everything! But that should keep you going for now.

dbkick... Your right about the glass! In all honesty, it was a random idea to bounce around, so thanks for the input. I probably won't be using that anytime soon, but i like to have options. LOL... question: what is the ideal temp for water in most hydro-like systems? i.e the cooler or storage tote

Captain Jazz... first of all, nice to have another Capt on board. lol, thank you for your advice. I do need to get my light reflected better, and humidity has been a big concern. The space i have right now is very narrow, so it was closed up with plastic shower curtain liners on both sides, but the tape sucks and i had to open it up a bit to allow for my fan. I hope to be moving my grow spot all together so I can set it up better. This was the first spot that I had that didn't need an excessive amount of moving, cleaning and so forth... would an aluminum baking pan (disposable) work for the bottom to up humidity? or would the aluminum possibly cause bad reflection spots that could cause burn?
Lol, aye captain!
Nah, no worries about heat spots with CFL's. Not enough intensity to cause any concerns.

soil? goodbye! I thought this was about hydro!
Lol.. yes we all love hydro, but this is her first grow, and as long as she gets some half decent compost, puts something to help it drain in the bottom, and uses some perilite and/or vermiculite in the mix, then she will get decent results, with less chances for mistakes.
1 gal pots for veg, then 3-5 for flowering should see you right. A lil bit of veg nutes from 2nd week of veg, up to 2nd week of flowering, followed by some bloom nutes/boosters until 2 weeks before harvest, and she should get a good harvest with some decent lighting.

you're questioning her ability? My first grow was hydro and I knew nothing of growing anything either in soil or hydro! a pound and a half later (off 4 plants) I had a little more confidence.

Not at all. But ithere are more things that can go wrong with hydro, and most of the time, once you can see the problem, the damage is done, and she's already got them in soil, and you shouldn't change from one to the other. I agree with bonzi, get a good mother plant, and then start next cuttings in hydro.

true I suppose a good source of cuttings/clones I take for granted since all I have to do is hit craigslist for whatever I might need.

Psychological projection or projection bias is a psychological defense mechanism where a person unconsciously denies their own attributes, thoughts, and emotions, which are then ascribed to the outside world, such as to the weather, or to other people. Thus, it involves imagining or projecting that others have those feelings

Thank you Bonzi! I knew I knew it, but I'm too medicated right now to google! What is your opinion on this topic? Do plants like music or do we like music therefore deducing that plants must too? (Just one example of how I see it applied in cultivation)

I HOPE I'm pulling 6oz/plant by my 20th grow. I pulled 1 1/4 per plant on my first grow and figure I'm doing ok as long as SOMETHING(yield, QUALITY, etc) increases with each grow.

LOL... dbkick don't go! This is my first soil grow, using what I have so far, but I am very interested in learning more about hydroponics!!! I planned on ordering a kit I found tomorrow to start my next grow in once the room is properly set up. I am ordering 10 white widow seeds, doing 6 in the hydro, and the other 4 in fox farm. I going for both! Just want to get my first grow under my belt. Only two weeks in from seed, so I have a while to go, but I am definitely already preparing for the next one. Hell, if I only get one good plant from this grow, that would be phenomenal!!! I have never had a green thumb, so the fact that 1 is doing really good is all because of this forum! So anything for this grow or future grows is very much so appreciated!

Yeah, its really hard to find true white widow around here and i'm sick of dealing with all this overpriced bullshit... and I do have a lot of anxiety that needs to be smoked away. lol... cant really take xanax because I'm a stay at home mom, and still need to function. Thats why i opted away from chemical pharmaceuticals a long time ago. I have been taking vicodin, darvocet and flexeral for my back, hip and knee for almost a decade... I am too young to have so many issues! :P lol

i hear ya on all of that girl. i have tried the chem based stuff and it just completely messes up my system. so i will stick with the naturals thank you very much. i too have back problems. scoliosis.
not only does it take the pain away (makeing me not so crabby) but it also gives me the energy i need to get things done.

Exactly Barbie!!! I can completely function as a normal part of society when I am blitzed, but when I am not, I am very anti-social and depressed and moody (being bi-polar doesn't help)... as for my back... well my back is fucked! I have two vertebrae that are slightly twisted (on top of the curving), and pinching nerves. Not to mention the degenerating discs... and a few other things that still have to be confirmed by MRI... Both of my knees hyper-extend which hurts like a bitch when it happens... I also have some digestion issues it helps with... If it wasn't for Mary Jane, I wouldn't be able to do anything most days except lay on the couch in pain. Smoking gives me the ability to be active and play with my daughter... to do all the other wonderful thing us stay at home moms get to do i.e. laundry, cooking and such crap. I would give up alcohol, cigarettes and everything else pharmaceutically available... TAKE IT!!! TAKE IT ALL!!! Just give us this one thing in return!!! I know I'm not that old, but I have a lot of issues... lol, and I am a big advocate of legalization... as my signature says... its just a plant...

p.s. after having 2 kids by c-section and weighing more than I ever had in my life... when I started smoking again full time... I lost 70lbs... even with the munchies... no exercise or dieting either (unless you count sex as an exercise.... tee he!) and I definitely DIDN'T give up pop either... LOL

haha... forgot to add that I am a complete insomniac too... LMFAO... I need help!

UPDATE: Cut out 2 pots out of 6... One successfully grew a blade of grass... I mean like grass grass... and one just had nothing... I checked it for any sign of life... lol Notta! So i have them now two under each fluorescent (with the covers off) The one solid plant has already grown since my pic earlier today. Very happy. Still trying to raise my humidity a litlle more... generally around 33%, but I think it would do better higher. Thanks everyone for everything so far... you have all been a great source of knowledge!!!
