1st grow in a PC case, 125W envirolight 2700k, auto big bang and auto jack

hey people. iv been following this website quite a bit (look through pictures of plants for hours lol) and have been wanting to grow for a good 2-3 years now, just been anxious starting it as im guessing many people would on their first grow. finally decided to just give it a go and see the outcome.

SETUP:
setup is fairly simple and hasn't cost me a lot. i have an old pc case which i stripped out (gave me a few bloody cuts doing it lol >.<), a 125w envirolight 2700k with plug fitting (£35), mylar (£2), gaffer tape (best buy ever!!!! for £5), pc fan 80mm (£3),a 12v plug for powering my fan which i found in one of my draws (think it was from my keyboard/piano thingy) and electrical insulation tape for wiring the fan to the plug (£2).

note -- still need to buy a thermometer/humidity tester and a ph kit

MEDIUM:
i am growing in B&Q compost with a mix of perlite with about a 60:40 mix. i know nothing else about the compost apart from iv heard good things and its grown me some pretty nice chillies this year.

PLANTS:
the plants iv decided to grow are auto big bang (£4.70 per seed - greenhouse seeds) and auto jack (£3.98 per seed - not sure where from) which i both bought from pickandmixseeds. Don't know why i picked these seeds, i have just seen the names go round a bit and seemed to stick with me. heard big bang is good for medicinal purposes so it will help my chronic back pain hopefully (will have to wait and see, fingers crossed though)

GERMINATION:
i simply dampened some tissue, wrapped the seeds in them, placed them in a cup with a dvd case over the top and put them in my cupboard. both germinated in 2 days (100% succes so far for my first 2 seeds)

think that's all the basics. since these are autoflowering i am using a 20/4 light cycle. i read on the pickandmixseeds website that the auto jack prefers a 12/12 light cycle or it will have fluffier buds at the end - can anyone confirm this who has grown the strain before? im just going to keep on 20/4 for now.

im simply feeding them tap water for now until i get a ph kit and in about 2 weeks i will start giving them nutrients. can anyone recommend a good solution for beginners (from the UK)

now the pics:

a bit of stretching going on since i had to start on a window ledge.

on day 12 the end of the big bang leafs are curled up, dry and brown. i think this is because it is taller so it could be just burning from the light? not too sure though.
anyone know why the big bangs leafs are reaching/stretching upwards too? never seen this before looking through the countless threads i have here.

and to fix the stretching i plan to bury the stem when re potting upto the lowest set of leafs.

any questions feel free to ask and ALL help is much appreciated :D

update day 15

everything seems ok, repotted them earlier on today and covered up half the stem with compost and watered slightly to hopefully fix the stretching problem.

to me the jack looks quite healthy compared to the big bang which doesn't really look too good.

i cant really figure out if there's anything wrong because my thermometer/hygrometer hasn't arrived yet and i dont have a ph testing kit.

i moved them a lot further away from the light since it looked like the big bang was burning on the edges but again im not sure if it was too hot cos i dont have a thermometer yet.

even though it's my first grow and im 15 days in iv leant a bit already. first of all not to cut corners, i really rushed into this grow >.< i have haven't come up with a way to get rid of the smell when they start flowering. im going to buy some ONA block and hope that does the trick, if not i think im going to finish them outside since there is a good few weeks left of decent weather before it starts getting freezing again. then either build a new, bigger grow room with a carbon filter or customise this pc so i can attach one to the back spending a bit more time on it.

another thing is space when they start flowering. do autos respond well to LST? if they get too big i have no choice to do that or again send them outside til harvest.

dont know if i just worry too much tho lol.

hows it looking so far guys?

day 18 and everything is looking great to me. i put them in the sun a bit today since they are stuck in a pc case all day and it was a scorching hot day. we have our first signs of white hairs on the jack too!! i cant take a picture of that close up cos this camera is pretty rubbish but ill be sure to update soon.

also received my ph testing kit, my tap water seems to be fine. it is coming out at about 6.8. still waiting on my thermometer/hygrometer though. postage is taking the piss >.<

are my plants doing ok being real small and bushy? im guessing its because iv used a 2700k from seed but it's keeping it nice and small for now (hopefully will stay small so i dont run out of space)

hey, thanks for stopping by. about 180 views and only 1 comment lol. update time though.

received my thermometer/hygrometer through the post a few days ago so i can check the situation now. temps seems good ranging from 74-86. humidity seems low though, it is hanging around the 31-37% mark. i heard it was good to have about 50% for flowering. any suggestions for raising humidity? i tried adding a little cup of water to evaporate but it didn't really make any difference. ill give it another shot though.

picture time! im sorry they are crap quality pics. some from my phone and some from ipod touch (bought thinking the camera would be awesome but i was wrong. so if you are thinking of buying one to take pics they are really not that great >.<)

no hairs on the big bang yet, the jack has shot a few out over a few nodes. no smell yet either but i am going to pick up some ONA block for when buds start to show. if that doesn't eliminate the upcoming smell i'm expecting then ill make me a cheap diy carbon filter.

height seems to ok for now but im guessing in flower they are going to shoot off?

i'm going to be fixing up the pc case a bit soon as it has a little light leak and not the best ventilation. hope the case is how i want it by grow number 2.

hows it looking? i feel its going good for my first grow, i was worried about loads but i just bit the bullet and will cross problems when i get to them. i still have a lot to learn.

They look fine, but I would use a 6500K CFL bulb instead of the 2700K. 6500 is meant for vegging, while 2700 is meant for flowering. I have 5 fem Jack seeds laying around, just waiting to build a box to plant them. Do you have fans for an intake and exhaust on that PC? Nevermind, I just read your entire first post. You might want to get another fan to keep the air circulating in that box.

i've literally just returned from adding a new fan in which is shown below lol. thanks though.

the one at the bottom which was my outtake is now my intake and iv added an outtake just right of the light so it can take the heat out from the top of the case. the main reason i added it was because i thought my temps were ok but my thermometer was placed on the floor of the pc case. since putting it level with my plants it was running 90+ in there!

added intake.JPG

and i used 2700k for the plants life cos i couldn't really afford another bulb at the start and it will keep my plants from getting out of control a bit more through the veg stage. this grow is more of an experiment than making my yield as big as possible. on my future grows in here im planning on buying a 6500k bulb for vegging then using scrog so i can keep the plants low and improve yield.

yeah man defo. im not expecting to pull too much off this grow though, i see it as more of an experiment. even if i get a few grams its more than i had before lol :blsmoke:

after adding the new fan we're running at about 87f at canopy level. i still want to get it a little lower so im going to play around tomorrow with different fan combos like 2 outtake or move the intake to the front bottom of case and see which gives me the best results. if none work ill try add another fan facing directly down the centre of the bulb. then if none of that works im going to plan B and getting rid of this huge ass bulb for some smaller ones lol.

What fitting are you using for that bulb?
I had issues with getting decent fittings with UK bulbs. :-(

Other than that, looking good! Love PC case grows.

thanks for dropping in. i bought it from my local hydro shop for £10 and is made by ecotechnics.

http://www.ecotechnics.co.uk/lighting.htm it is about 60-70% of way down the page, its the CFL light hanger.

only place on google shopping i could see that sells them is here: http://www.emhan.com/item/ecotechnics-cfl-eco-lamp-hanger

there'll be other companies which make them but im not sure of that sorry

temps seem good today - running at 84f and humidity at around 40.

planning on buying some bio bizz bloom for flowering. can i go wrong with this? let me know if you've used it with good results people.

Looking good man.
Good look man :peace:

sub'd :)
hey man, cheers. grab a chair

i was just thinking about how the jack looks like it has indica in it than the big bang. what do you people prefer the look of? indica, sativa or a mix? gotta say i prefer the look of a mix leaning more towards the indicas wider leafs.

ill put some pics up tomorrow of the girls if i get time before work. got me some ONA block now too so ill see if it works if or when i start to encounter smells.

hey guys. update time!!

the ladies in my opinion are coming along just great and so far i couldn't be happier with my first grow. temps are looking good after installing the second fan, they run steadily around 80-82 at daytime. humidity is hanging around 40 too.

getting a bit jungle like in there now.

pics time. the jack is the one starting to flower where the big bang hasn't even shown sex yet. hopefully it will soon though.

as you can see i have also tied them down a little bit. i did this as mainly a precaution so i don't get them shooting off into the light in the next couple of weeks. smell has just started on the jack but you have to put your nose next to the plants.

im going to look for a digital camera today so if i do ill upload some good quality pics then!

take care guys :blsmoke:

hey man lovin the case, ur doin really well for ur first grow and considering ur not using any nutes. ive had good experience with the bio bizz range, have never had to use it at full strenth tho but that depends on the needs of the strain. i think ur better sticking to indicas just because of the height issue, sativas can get 2-3 meters tall! also the 2700k would cause the plants to stretch more than if using a 6400k during veg. ive grown in tents before but due to my current situation im looking at doing somthing on the same scale so looking forward to see how this turns out.
keep up the good work

thanks man! im considering not even using nutes this grow for a reason. on my next grow im planning on having a 6500k for veg next time and wanting to use nutes on my 2nd grow. i want to see the comparison of it all, using different lights and nutes to see the outcome and differences between all the plants. it can only teach me what is best for the ladies! got auto hindu kush and auto blueberry seeds for next round i cannot wait to try those 2 strains.

im not sure if my big bang has shown signs of sex yet. there's no white hairs but i cant seem to see any ball. there's a couple of pics below if anyone can tell from the pictures what sex it is or if it isn't showing signs yet. and thanks in advance!

looks like you got an auto big bang without the auto... how old is it already? what is your light schedule?
if it's 18/6, then I bet changing it to 12/12 will probably trigger flowering..
