180 Marijuana Dispensaries Pop Up In Detroit: ‘This Is The Next Big Thing In The City’



One of the fastest growing businesses in the Motor City has many residents raising concerns: Medical marijuana dispensaries.

“This is the next big thing in the city of Detroit,” said Councilman James Tate. “It’s quiet for folks who are not really paying attention, but everyday it seems like another business is opening up.”

Tate told WWJ’s Charlie Langton the number of medical marijuana dispensaries within city limits is “staggering.”

“The estimate is 180 medical marijuana dispensaries within the city of Detroit,” he said. “I’ve counted 13 in District One myself. We see some locations, certainly along 8 Mile and other border streets, where you have four, five, six kind of clustered together.”

Even though state law allows registered patients to use marijuana for medical purposes, dispensaries have gone largely unregulated.

“I’m for compassionate care but am also concerned about the over saturation of them,” Tate said. “These buildings, they have now just started popping up everywhere and because the state law is not clear on if they’re allowed or not, we take these businesses to court and they just get tied up and they just stay there. We have not won not one case, nothing has been shut down and that’s the reason why. Most of these businesses don’t have a permit, they have no licensing.”

Aside from legal issues, Tate said he’s also concerned about community members who live near the dispensaries.

“We’ve got a lot of complaints about it but some of that is emotional because they just don’t like the issue. The other part of it is people are not educated on it,” he said. “It’s not about being against it. It’s about making sure that we’re able to regulate it in a way that ensures the best quality of life for the residents who live in that area.”

Tate said their hands are basically tied until lawmakers in Lansing can refine the medical marijuana law and include measures about dispensaries.

“We’re trying to get state law clarified to allow us to provide the tools necessary for our law enforcement to go in and regulate those businesses,” he said. “But it’s a lot bigger than just Detroit and we’re going to need some support from around the state.”

so....when did the law get unclear again? seemed pretty clear when the pricks shut jackson down. I thought the whole state got pretty clear letters. I want to run a provision center but I'm not putting my balls on the chop block for when clarity returns to these fools and they come kicking does again

I hear ya brother, months ago a patient down in Calhoun County plead to use of a controlled substance for simply medicating/growing in his own home (Rory Larkey). The law's all fucked up along with all the clowns selling it (Judges/Prosecutors to Pot Lawyers)! My guess is that a whole bunch of would be disillusioned "Provisioning Centers" owners deep in the game (aka legal retainers and lobbying) found their attorneys singing a different tune (same as the last 7 years)

Wayne County law enforcement really backed off in the last 18 months. I hardly ever hear of anyone getting raided in the area anymore, with the exception of a few downriver cities. I've heard accounts from many caregivers at the shop describing situations where law enforcement has encountered their grows because of non related issues and not batted an eye.

To back that point up, I also have a friend who is an ex union rep with some political ties, who has told me that LEO in many wayne county cities have been instructed to not waste any resources pursuing patients unless organized crime involvement is suspected.

The price in metro however has fallen dramatically because of the freedom given to the industry. Some of the people I consider to grow some of the best meds in the area have dropped their compensation requirements $50-75/oz.

50$ an oz? That's nearly break even for power time nutes etc. Not even considering what $$$ they may be out should they find themselves in court with confiscated equip cash and product. Tack on a lawyer Bill and ima say that price is not just cheap but dangerous for your friends feedom and shit.

Just to be clear, there is nowhere near 180 actual dispensaries in Detroit. There may be 180 listed of weedmaps or something like that but at least 90% of them are just caregivers who deliver meds.

I personally don't fuck with any dispensaries but a few of my friends do, you can still get about $175 for true top shelf meds...

I wanna smoke some 75 dollar top shelf. Really. I can't even really grasp the concept? Not asking for weed on here but if someone wants to prove the $50-75 for quality is an option I would love to see it.
Around here 200 seems average and there is very, very few decent examples of cannabis.

I read the recent 50-75 price drop to mean zips are now going for 175-200 wholesale, as that seems about right to me.

Cory, I think he meant that the prices have fallen by $50-$75. Instead of selling oz's for $250, they are now $200.

LOL, that makes much more sense to me. that's closer to reasonable to me, 175-200 per, course they must pay DICK to get those 175 oz....but that's none of my business.

I've been to 2 in Detroit, both near Telegraph and grand river and 6 mile. My guess is theres like 30--50 of them, yeah not 180.

2 grams for $25 for mid grade or business class the one shop called it. $40 an 1/8....good bud,, they got $20 a gram bud also and $8 a gram..I got a free gram of the $8 bud and it tasted kind of shitty but was otherwise really good but of course when I went back to get more, they were all out of it.

But with gas under $2 its road trip time up to the Clubhouse in Flint, $25 for 3.7 grams is more like it with free samples to boot..No place I know of in Detroit, can U smoke bud on site, so while Detroit might be kind of cool, Flint is way cooler and I feel safer there too. I can
not believe all crap that happens in Detroit, from a car full of teenagers being shot up, to nail salons being held up mid day with 25 women robbed inside at gun point. People get killed just shoveling their driveway or walking out of a dollar store..every week its something else, with few arrests happening. Sorry but I've gotten to the point where I try to stay out of Detroit anytime of the day.

In the 5 minute time frame the council allowed me to address them i asked them all a valid question , the question being this .

While you boobs sit here & watch the city crumble others are opening businesses , would you rather see the buildings vacant again vs a dispensary ?

Even though i demanded an answer as part of the Landlords association with vacant commercial properties in their districts they refused to answer my question.

I posed the same question to the city of Flint council & got the same deer in the headlights stare while they watched the clock tick .

The city is being ran by fools .

Yeah I agree, look what happen to those cities, they been on a downhill slide for decades, its been getting worst and worst as time moves on. Some cities improve, others degrade

Impossible to sit through a few city council meetings and not understand why the city is so fucked up.
Anyone count the number of crack houses and houses selling packs of heroine? That number is unfortunately higher than 180.

175 is the most I have been offered since the outdoor meds hit the market in the fall. Prior to that I was offered anywhere from 200-250.

Exactly. That is wholesale though. Individual oz's still going for 225-300 for top shelf from top caregivers in the area.

Snyder can veto that regulation on e cigs bill in a timely manner because it steps on Feds toes as they have said they opposed yet this fuck has TWO fuckin bills we need passed. Feds said medical allowed by states choice pass the damn dispensary and edible/concentrate bill already what's the hold up

Those bills have been in (state) congress for the past two years and running. Nothing has made it out of that debauchery to be signed and I am unaware of any plans for that to change in the near future. I believe most will finally cut their loses with those lobbies this year and move onto a recreational vote from the People in 2016. Recreational will be a closed and tightly controlled system of state licensed Production (grows), Provisioning (dealers) and Quality Assurance (labs). That is what they actually wanted with those medical bills that failed and hopefully no matter how underhanded (behind closed doors) will never occur.
