for me it really depends on your grow space, ventilation, temperature and humidity control, etc.

The only problem with an HPS is the heat output, which could ruin your harvest. I have two grow rooms: a Homebox L with 400w HPS and a Homebox XS with a 250w CFL. I tried to put a 150w HPS in there but with the size of the exhaust fan and size of the room, it just got way too hot and I switched back to the CFL.

Definitely, but if it you have a very small grow are an HPS will roast your plants while potentially increasing humidity and risk of fungal infection.

I did just recently steer my buddy towards these bad boys, I use their 6500k version for veg,

Feliz 250 Watt Compact Fluorescent Bulb is a 2700K energy efficient plant grow bulb. It has a high lumen output and low heat output so it does not damage plant leaves. This color lamp is used when a plant is in its flowering growing stage.

Wattage: 250 Watt Fluorescent
Lumens: 15,000
Base: Mogul
Burn Position: Universal
Color: 2700K

and it doesn't get hot at all, I promise

But since hps is HID it penetrates the canopy better. Also if u got good vent it should stay cool moving fan is good and u can keep hps 1foot away.

I have tried 5 CFLs with my plants, changed to 4 CFLs because they were too hot, now I have an HPS on.

the temps don't even compare, those 4 CFLS were bringing temps to ~95ish. the HPS keeps the room 85ish when on, but my HPS has a glass window over it.

Keep in mind dude you have to put CFLs closer to your plants, like inches from it, in order to get the amount of lumens a HID light can put out being a foot away.

PS a 250 Watt CFL has to put out heat. Maybe not in the bulb, but definetly in the ballast, all that 250 watts of power has to go somewhere.
