150watt HPS lighting question..

Hey everyone, quick question...


I bought a 150watt HPS lighting system from 'SunSystems' about 6 months ago. Great lamp.. works great and doesn't put out hardly any heat... then again it's only 150watts too. She also puts out a fair amount of lumens.. I think its around 18k lumens.

But anyhow, I've seen and heard about conversion bulbs.. however I seem to be having problems finding what I need.. or I could be looking for the wrong thing.

Do they not make a conversion bulb for HPS systems? Where you can run an MH bulb using the HPS lamp?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as I just got my new 'ICE' beans from Nirvana in the mail today and they're germinating as we speak... and I'm really not wanting to put them under CFL bulbs (so they can sit under "daylight" spectrum during veg. cycle) before I move them into the flower box which is where my 150watt HPS lamp is located.

I guess.. in to make this easy for all of us.. let me ask this question like this:

"Do I need an HPS conversion bulb?" OR! "Do I need an MH conversion bulb?"

I think i can help you, i have a 150 hps from sunsystem also, it is a nice little light but i use it for veggies and like you wanted a better spectrum so i looked. They make conversion bulbs but i dont think they make them this small, and im pretty sure its a mag ballast so you cant just screw one in. i basically saw this exact light being discussed on another site and the conclusion was you are stuck with hps.

Yeah, unless I had the money to just go out and get a MH system.. which I don't have.

guess I'll just have to use my old CFL bulbs for the veg cycle... damn it.

You know? They should tell the consumer that this lamp doesn't currently have any conversion bulbs available.. so that way people wouldn't end up in the same situation that I'm currently in.

or do the research before you buy,i would assume any one who buys a hps system wants to run hps, i start all my out door veggies under a 150hps and they love it,you can add some cfls if your super worried about it, its not like the hps light is gunna kill you ladys,

Oh no no no.. I know that its not going to kill them or even harm them for that matter.

I just like to use the "daylight" spectrum for my vegging.. and the "warmer" lower spectrum for all my flowering needs... That's all.

I mean.. personally.. I guess I could just use what I have for the veg cycle and flower cycle. Use the HPS for veg & flower cycles. Surely it won't affect the plant.. or slow growth or anything.

I may just try that.. or like you said too.. I could also use some of the old 'daylight' spectrum CFL bulbs I have saved from when I grew with CFL lights only.

i have the same 150 u got. i heard one of the guys at the store say they may make one soon because a few companys got these 150 systems now. but i have not found one yet either, if i do i will let ya know.

For everyone and anyone that may be having problems finding a conversion bulb.. that will work with your 150watt HPS lighting system(s)..

Good news! Here's the email I just got.. figured I would post it and let all my fellow growers who are needing the same thing I am needing in on the information.

thats cool to know, i run a 150 with 4- 65k cfls for my veg closet.I wonder what kind of stats this little bugger has. sounds good for 30 bucks.

Why would you scale down from a 250.. to a 150??

Usually, people scale UP.. not down. Just curious.. as to why anyone would do that.
