150w HPS in 60x70cm box - is it enough light?

Hello growers,
I created my box WxLxH=60x70x130cm. Cool tube will be on the 100cm hight, pot is high aprox. 20 cm, that means that plat will have 80cm to grow in hight.
I bought 150W HPS, because 250W+ create much more heat that 150W.

I am wondering, is this 150W enough light for one or max. 2 plants? Will this growing area be light covered well with 150W HPS?

Hello Muha,
I am more used to inches, so you box is like 23" by 27" which is pretty close to the size box I use. I am on my second grow right now and had pretty good results using a 150 hps myself, although I added a 100 watt T5 on the back wall and was still able to control the temperatures. I do not grow a single plant but head towards a modified Sea of Green style grow on a flood table with 8 plants on this grow. My reasoning is simple, you could only place one plant in a box that size without doing some sort of modification to the plant, and just the one would fill the box up, stopping the light from reaching lower buds. I am just about to post my weekly pictures although with the update my grow journal is gone. I will post enough pics to get a good idea of how I am doing my grow and will post a link for you once it is done. But to answer your question, yes, a 150 will do a pretty good job in a box that size.

Hi Admortis,

Thank you a lot for your answer and please send me the links of your grow journal :-). I can't wait to see your 150W journal. You gave me hope that harvest will be good with 150W.
Yes, my box is 24"x28". I hope that I will have hard rock buds :weed: with 150W. I read somewhere on forums that 50W goes per sq feet, actually:
Watts per square foot (wattage per sq ft WILL vary by light source):

Minimum wattage per sq ft.: 30w
Mid Range wattage per sq ft.: 50w
Optimal Range wattage per sq ft.: 50-80w

I have 2x2,3 ft (4,6 sq ft) => 150W/4,6 sq ft = 32,61W per 1sq ft.

For optimal light in box of 230 W=4,6sq ft x 50W

If it is the rule of thumb, I have a bit more then minimum and because of that I am afraid that plant won't have swollen and hard rock buds. Also, as you said 150W doesn't have good light penetration.

Because of all this theoretical knowledge, I would like to hear from your own experience (maybe the theory is wrong :roll:) did you have good results with 150W HPS on this kind of box.

I was getting pretty good results with just the 150..two weeks before the grow was to be done I purchased the t5 solely to use as a cloning light and had the secondary thought of placing it vertically behind the plants. I was shocked at the amount of density I got in the last two weeks. For my first grow, I got 15 grams each off of two of the plants and the other smaller plants gave up a total of 10 more grams. Forty grams is not too bad for a first attempt, and I did have problems, which I believe are all worked out now. Something I would recommend to you in such a small spot is to either do a scrog or sog for penetration reasons. I do a sea of green (sog), but If you want to keep it simple and get maximum yield I would say to go with a screen of green (scrog). I went the more complicated route to perfect the method for a larger grow that will be starting soon. But a scrog is real simple; simply place a horizontal screen about 12 to 14 inches above one or two potted plants and train them to fill the screen. This will allow you to keep the light about 8 to 12 inches above the screen line and the buds for even light distribution. At the end of this grow my current box is going to be a cloning chamber, with mother in the bottom and clones taken from mother every two weeks in the top. My grow has a new home ready and waiting with a 1000 watt hps and will house a perpetual sog so I can get a harvest every two weeks (I love to smoke alot..lol). BTW, the buds were rock hard with awesome density..forty grams dried I think is pretty good for such a small room and a first grow. Your 150 will give up lots of good buds. Happy Growing bongsmilie
