Kind of sounds like you've already made up your mind but I thought I'd give my 2 cents anyways...
240watts (the Blackstar you were talking about) of anything seems pretty weak for a 3x3 area... I'd say you want AT LEAST 350 true watts to get some serious footprint and penetration going on. That having been said, LED all the way! I used to grow with HID, but I'm a total LED convert now.
