There's your problem right there. Preparation. Im new also but in my experiences in life you should always do ghing hands on and learn from your mistakes.
I'd rather ask when to properly take a cutting first then do a few nasty cuts. yes experience is the best teacher, but there's no reason to reinvent the wheel. if the information is available, why not seek it
