Clones are easy what do you use?
I use straight Coco like I do everything else and it works great, I just hate cutting and labeling and misting and everything that comes along with clones. I don't run perpetuals so all of my keepers circulate amongst my buddies, so I can always pull something back and put it through quarantine if I want to. Plus I'm not in a legal state and the less rooted plants I have in the worst case scenario the better.

Stretchy bitches in the vert tent, that's for sure..I pulled several more large fans after these pics were taken to air things out a bit, things are looking great. The vert plants are all stretching nearly at the same rate which is great news, they're all 48-50" at the moment if I had to estimate. Those will get maybe one more bottom node lopped off but I'm not going to do much else to them as for once in my life I don't care about getting a couple ounces of larf this run. It's still way better than normal shitty airy popcorn and I have an inkling that I might want to spend a whole day with the bubble bags this run since I hardly smoke flowers anymore (or anything anymore for that matter).

I'll start tying these to the wall in the next day or so and continue over the course of the stretch. Need to grab some twist-ties and a few more reusable zip ties so I don't waste all my normal ones.

400w...

Still haven't tied anything down here with the exception of pulling a couple of stalks together that split with some rough handling. I think I'm still not fully committed to this being a horizontal tent and I'm still seriously considering dropping a 600w bare bulb down the middle in there. I'll be pushing it with my 20 amp allowance (really 16 amps @ 80% load if I'm being smart about it) but I think I could pull it off. We'll see how I'm feeling I guess...

here's an upskirt shot of the 400w...like I said, much less aggressive on the lower pruning than I typically would be this run:

Hey bro your plants are looking mean.

How do you set your light through the very process. Do you hang it slightly above the canopy or try to keep it pretty even

I tried. My temps went crazy in the tent. Not enough ventilation. Then again in an air conditioned room. Again too much heat. Even had vert screens and did the training. But had to go back to horizontal. You bet your ass I still got the sockets though. For now I'm working on getting cuttings to root. I can't clone for shit. Lol. It'll come to me.
You get that vert going yet?

Thanks dude, yours are looking good too for sure. So I veg until about the final week before flipping under normal horizontal light, then switch to the vert setup with the 1000w at 60% power (600w, same as what I use for late veg) for a few days hanging about a foot or so above the highest point of the canopy, then switch to HPS and up it to full power for the last few days before the flip to let it get acclimated. You could swap the bulb for an HPS earlier if you wanted to promote some more stretch in a strain that isn't ideally suited for vertical too. Honestly I don't know if that process is necessary but it works so I keep doing it. I have seen some kinda rough looking transitions between MH and HPS so that's why I do it slowly.

As the plants stretch I don't really move the light unless I see after a week or two of flipping that they aren't going to stretch enough, at which point I'll lower it a bit. Once flowering is in full gear the light ends up hanging slightly higher than smack dab in the middle of the vertical canopy. My thought is that I'm wasting some of the light blast downwards if I have it right in the middle, but really I'm sure the difference is negligible either way.

You get that vert going yet?

I'd like to know as well!

I tuned in here to see how the silver mountains turn out. Mine turned out pretty well. I'm curious though, given the vert bulb and the fan below, don't you think moving to a horizontal light would be more productive given the fact that you could throw another plant in the middle of your tent?

Not a chance. I could put 6 plants in that space under the same light with a horizontal reflector and still yield less with all other things equal than with the 5 plants I have in the vertical setup. You utilize far more of the available light in the vertical setup.

You have to remember that in a horizontal grow, the canopy is...well...horizontal, so the lateral space you have is the space you have, period. With the vertical setup I have essentially tripled or quadrupled the available canopy space and made it a vertical canopy rather than a horizontal one. This of course doesn't translate directly to a 3-4x gain in yield by any means, but I can say with confidence that with all other factors remaining the same, you will easily get 1.5x the yield in a vertical setup versus a horizontal one even if you don't know what you're doing.

Yeah, I understand the concept of vert and why it has the potential to yield well, but a lot of the productive setups I've seen are not only tall but they're also a lot wider than your tent. Basically tall trees with lots of branching trained through some sort of cylindrical cage. Given your restrictions, I could see one going vert with your setup with a smaller bulb. Horizontal in that tent with a 1000 should give you 32 pieces without much work.

I've also wondered about the downtime that's associated with vert. With a horizontal setup, the light just hangs with a one-in-one out plan for the plants below. It's a productive setup 365 days/year. There seems to be a lot of downtime with vert as the plants seem to need to grow into the space and be trained for a few weeks before they're flipped. I've never seen a perpetual vert setup. People seem to yield well in vert given a two month time frame but is it possible to squeeze 6 harvests in per year?

But I'm not here to critique and don't feel the need to defend what you're doing, I'm just curious about the silver mountains. IMO, the best examples have clusters of seed bracts rather than colas of dense flowers. Expect great yields with some piney, minty, funky aromas.

These were the best...

These were just good...

Those look great, that Kali cross really catches my eye in particular...haven't had any Kali Mist for the better part of a decade but it will always be one of my top 5 of all time.

I see exactly what you're saying now, and I think you're exactly right about my particular type of vertical setup producing less in a given year than a perpetual horizontal setup in the same space would. Kind of like the whole question of how to quantify yield with the standard gram per watt formula as you have to factor in total time invested rather than just looking at the final yield versus the wattage used, I suppose.

I only do 1-2 runs per year and don't run perpetuals at all, so strictly for my purposes the vertical is the best setup in my experience.

As for 2 units out of that space horizontally...maybe for you or somebody who knows what they're doing, but I'm mediocre at best with the horizontal game as you can probably tell from this thread. With the amount of veg these things got I wouldn't be shocked with 1.5 from the 1000w tent alone...but that still requires me to push out over a qp per plant. I guess I pulled 3-4 per plant from 1gal fabric pots last run so that's always a possibility, but again, not something I'm taking to the bank by any means. I have zero experience with any of these crosses and this is a fresh seed run so I'm not really holding my breath for any number in particular. Either way, yield is really secondary to quality for me so it's not all that big of a concern, but fun to think about.

Thanks for posting and I don't mind critiques at all, always looking to get better. Take it easy man

Oh and at the end of the day, I think we can all agree that higher plant counts are needed for the highest possible yields in most cases. My simple donut is a hell of a lot less productive than a multi-site aero octagon or something like that for damned sure.

My only complaint about silver mountain was that it wasn't quite sativa dominant enough for me. Otherwise, they're fragrant, frosty, heavy yielding, great tasting flowers that my patients seem to really like. A quick pollen chuck to my kali keeper might fix my complaint but either way I think you'll be a happy camper. The aromas were really nice too. One of mine was equal parts pine and bubble gum. Some expressions turned into piney, fruity funk in my jars. Best of luck!

hmm mines just drying right now, i am loving your smell descriptions. i have 2 that are gassy smelling, different structure but same smell and 1 that had rounder buds but smells slightly tropical fruit. the 4th plant was a bit airy with big buds, my least favourite.
