Depends on the size of your grow space and your reflector. I have 20 plants vegging in 3 gallon pots under a magnum XXL reflector with a 600W MH, but that is WAY to many. I might be able to fit 6 under there once they start flowering.

Just wondering how many smaller plants will a 1000 hps support if they are only 1ft to 2 ft ??? thanks guys
Using the 2 gal. grow bags packed tight, utilizing little (if any) training, and sounding like straight to 12/12 I would expect 4 rows of 5 to fit nicely. That's going by as you say "only 1ft to 2 ft" meaning finished and ready to cut.

Now if it's "only 1ft to 2 ft" meaning that's the present state and you intend to veg another month or more, do some FIM, LST, etc. Then maybe 4.
Are you going to utilize the stray light? what is the light patern of your hood, are you using one? Way too many variables to give a good answer (IMHO).

i had an almost 6' x 6' closet and used a 1000 watt. i started by putting 8 fems under the light. towards the end i was jamming 18 in there. i go against the grain. although some of the buds aren't getting tons of light they do quite well. you'll easily average an oz per plant (depending of course on all kinds of things). i have grown for so long that i've tried damn near every combination of plant numbers and most soil grow methods. i've come to the conclusion that i get my best yeilds when i put many plants in the room using 2 or 3 gallon grow bags, tying them down and moving the plants around when you feed them.

i now have a 600 watt in an almost 5' x 5' grow tent. i had 18 in there last grow and i shoved 22 fems in there this round (super silver haze, SAGE and swiss bliss). i decided to keep so many because i took clones of everything and i'm going to make mums of the best highs. killing the other 10 fems was hard.
