1000 Watt or Magnum XXXL

Hello all, I was curious what you guys think would make more sense.

Right now I am running 2 1000 watt 8 inch hoods. I am considering buying either an additional 8" hood with an additional 1000 watt bulb, or buying 2 xxxl magnum 8 inch air cooled hoods. My grow space is about 10x5. Thanks. I would buy 3 magnums but don't have the space :(

It's really down to those 2 options.

i personally would go with the XXXL air cooled. just bought 2 for my room, upgrading to 1000watters here soon, currently running 600's, and changing the grow room around a bit.

grow rooms are fairly similar, have a 10x8 grow room. will see how ~2500watts treats my space, then will go from there.
(3x125w led + 1x90w led)

love how close I can get my plants with these things. havent ran a full run with them yet, currently flowering my first full flower run through with them now, but i know yield will be increased.

A 10'x5' space is perfect for 2 1000w lights. Unless you have a really small hood then the ones you have should be fine. You really do not need to get a 3rd light as that would be overkill. A 1000w light has an optimal footprint of 5x5 and you would be surprised how little difference their really is between the better hoods. A quality 8" hood will give you basically the same footprint as a Magnim XXXL. What hoods do you have now?

I currently have 2 hydrofarm daystar hoods with 6" flange. They got the job "done", but the sides of my garden had a substantially less growth then the middle plants. They also overheated like crazy, and I will never get 6" for 1000 watt again. I was considering just using the two XXXL hoods, or upgrading the daystars to 3 Cool Sun XL hoods.

Yea, that is one of those really narrow reflectors. Either one of those will do just fine; the XXXL or the Cool Sun. If you get a good 6" fan and don't have any bends in your ducting then you'll be ok. Don't buy one of those cheap eBay fans or the other crap ones the hydro stores sell. CAN and MAX fans actually perform to their CFM ratings. A lot of the other fans do not. I had two 1000w lights in my veg room on 6" hoods with a CAN High Output 6" and straight line ducting and it worked fine.

i cooled a 1000 in a xxxl 6" with a 8" duct fan from lowes even pulled air through the scrubber first my room stayed @ 79*

I have a Can Max Fan 8", but the question is... do I Need two of them? I have 2 - 90 Degree bends on the ducts before the air exits. I have a sealed CO2 System, so the lights will be pulling garage air over them, and then it exits our a hole in my basement into my utility closet in the backyard. Total length the air will be travelling is about 20 feet from start to finish with two 70-90 degree turns.

Is there any way you can get rid of the 90 degree turns with "Y" ducts. That long a distance an you might want to think about another option. Maybe a 12" fan pulling through a duct reducer. Not really sure. Maybe you might need another 8" and run each light seperate. That is a reall long distance to be pulling air through 2 hoods with 2 90 degree bends.

They aren't pure 90 degree turns, I can probably adjust them to get them down to 60 degrees or so. Half of it is flexible ducting, and the other half is insulated ducting to reduce noise near the exit point.

you will be fine i heat my house with a 8" pushing and pulling a total of 60ft with no problems i have 3 90* and 1 wye duct and one reducer and a scrubber

One thing about the xxxl's is they are not very well sealed up. I have a lot of trouble with air leaking into my room from them. I've had to tape up all sides with foil tape, and I still get air leaking from the foam seals on the glass. It makes me lose a lot of co2 that isn't necessary. I wouldn't buy those again. I've heard the Raptor are much better assembled, and leak a lot less.

I really like the light pattern of them though, that is the upside.

DO NOT BUY A MAGNUM XXL!!!!!. They are horrible. Those hoods spread all ths light out to the side instead of downward. So less penetration and intensity. Your yield will be lower and buds will be smaller. they leak air tough. A bitch to take apart to clean. I learned that one the hard way a couple years ago. The best hoods are cool tubes with large reflectors. They spread the light more and downward and less air to pull. If you want a reg hood go with the sunlight supply yield master II. The yield master reflects mre downward and covers almost the same as the magnum.

Thanks Hyroot! Wish you had told me that a year ago before I bough 13 of them. LOL

Really though I haven't had any problems with them leaking air and our light meters are reading roughly the same on the 5x5 canopy we use per light. I'm actually getting more footcandles at a wider footprint which is always good. Plus, I think they are esay to clean. Just pop the 2 screws and the glass opens halfway. Wipe her down and go.

I ve been trying to sell mine for a long while, among my other ballasts and hoods. when I was using it. After one batch I replaced it with a hood called spartan. Cheap german hood. $60. Reflection and coverage on it is great. But it leaks air pretty bad. The glass slides out. Taped it up with foil tape.

Light meters are useless. Unless they measure PAR. Lumens or lux by definition is visible light to the human eye. Like I explained in the other thread. Get lumens out of your head. They mean nothing.

cool tubes suck. hot spots.

2nd point, everyturn in ducting GREATLY reduces airflow, something crazy like 30% recuction for a 45 degree turn. I dont exactly remember but the less turns the better, or run 2 fans.

Now people will say 2 1000 watts are perfect, but realistically I say 50 w a square foot, so ur 500 watts short. My suggestion is get a 600 watt for the middle of the 2 1000's. thatdbe 2600/50=52 watts a square foot. If cooling will work, I say get the other 1000, or 750, or a 600. But cooling gets priority to watts, if its too hot theres no point, it will hurt more than help.

Nope on the hot spots. Hot spots are created by air flow. You can be standing on a river bed covered in snow and be in a hot spot. If a cool tube made hot spots so would every other hood and even doing vertical would do it. I have 3 buddies with all cool tubes. 2 vent and 1 does not. They all have good air circulation. The only hot spots are off to the side. Because thats where the air pushes the heat too.

Crazy how Tec has changed in less than a decade……one day we are arguing on what 1000w hood is best…….the next we are arguing about what led is best lol………still got a xxxl magnum 1000w set up collecting dust…….can’t sell the damn thing ……might throw her in the middle of my optic 650s
