1 Gallon Pickle Jars for curing

I got a bunch of 1 gallon and 1/2 gallon pickle jars for free. They were all used but I cleaned them good (and the lids) with baking soda and soap to get the smell out. Then I let them sit out in the sun for a few days to air out.
So I'm planning on curing in them as they seem air tight.
Anyone done this and care to share their experience?

Also I may (theoretically) gift a close friend a jar full because she needs to make herself some RSO like pronto.
I'd kinda like to get her jar as smell proof as possible when getting it to her.
I would load it up, cap it and wipe everything down twice with rubbing alcohol.
Then I was going to (theoretically) dip the cap and the top of the jar in paraffin/wax mixed with a couple glue sticks to odor proof it. Kind of like the Makers Mark thing.
Thoughts?

Five bucks at Bed, bath, and Beyond for a decent 1 gal jar with sealing lid. Walmart even has them now. Your grow is worth more than five bucks right? Holds about 4-5 oz. depending on bud density. Been using the same jars for over 14 years. Think of it as an investment.

I use the 1 gallons, and absolutely love them. Just wash them they are glass and will clean up perfect. I just finished a jar that was over a year old and the weed was perfect the whole time. Maintained by Boveda. I was worried initially that the "lug" type lid would not be tight but it is very tight. More so than the normal Ball jars with a plastic cap. I'd use them :)

I’ve never really liked the plastic Ball caps. The standard band caps have always sealed perfectly so I just stick with those and buy replacements from time to time.

Kickapooh,
I use 1 gallon jars to cure my crop.
I have never had any issues with smell. Just use the proper lids and they seal air tight.

I have never seen someone dip the end in wax like a wine bottle or anything like that for smell proofing.
As it is not required.

As stated above keep it simple!

That's nice of you to share with friends.

Happy growing!

I pass on using the 2 piece lids for what's gonna be in a small 1/2 gallon or quart jar. But it's true the plastic lids definitely don't seal as well as the canning lids, but good enough for a month or two.
Beyond that I use way more canning jars for their intended purpose.............canning food :) than I do for weed. I like the plastic caps to replace the canning lids once I open a jar. A quart of pickles may hang for weeks in the fridge and I kinda like the plastic lids on them, seems much more sanitary.

I love them they are great. I after the dw I put a little baking soda and water, lid on very tight ( put in water proof bin) and shake the shit out of them and store them upside down for 2-3 days. I find the seal in the lid doesn't get all the "pickle" smell out, this works. Empty, rinse thoroughly.

I make kimchee frequently. I typically use the same jars and just wash them out by hand which doesn't seem to get all the smell out. I inadvertently used one of the jars to store some weed I had dried. It was just one plant grown in a small container of about an ounce. A week later I opened the jar to get a bud to smoke. It smelled like kimchee. I didn't smoke any. I'm going to give it away. I told a friend about it and he said not to throw it away because he'll use it to make edibles. So don't play around with pickle jars unless you get them really cleaned out.

I miss the kimchee I used to get from my friends Korean wife when I was in the service. I’ve tried so many store bought jars of kimchee since I got out of the service and they all taste like garbage.

Start making your own. That's what I do. The store bought stuff doesn't cut it.
