Lava rock and pumice shouldnt be this hard and expensive to find

Ok, it does float, but it does NOT work it's way up through the soil to the surface unless you blast the mix with a high pressure hose. Others say it breaks down and sinks and clogs drains. Which is it!? It floats AND sinks? My no-till mixes last ~5 years max till the peat moss breaks down so...

Lava rock and pumice shouldnt be this hard and expensive to find

Likely some You Tube "star grower/influencer". Organic container veggie gardeners are GTG for info. The Utube canna growers are quite often FOS, pushing expensive, un needed stuff. *I* avoid them like the plague. Wet

Lava rock and pumice shouldnt be this hard and expensive to find

Around here horticultural grade perlite is ~$22/4cf bag (30 gallons), and weighs 18lbs. A shit ton lighter than either pumice or lava rock and WAAY cheaper. It has worked well for me for over 45 years (since 1972), and see no need for the 'latest and greatest' fad. Do your research. Wet

Grounded oyster shell: is this consistency ok to use as an amendment?

You would just tear up your blender. Lime is about the cheapest thing in your whole mix. Around here, a 40lb bag is $4.50 at either HD or Lowes or, just about any garden shop or feed store. The smaller bags are more expensive. I've had mine for over 9 years & still have over 1/2 the bag left...

Soil tests are back, and Houston we have a problem.

You missed the first part of that statement ... In a well buffered soil... meaning getting the pH right from the git go, not chasing it during the grow. Wet

Grounded oyster shell: is this consistency ok to use as an amendment?

Must be as fine as flour. Mesh size is everything for availability and that is simply too coarse. *I* use pulverized Dolomite for pH and it works just fine and has for well over 40 years. Wet

Issues getting Ag Lime: will Dolomite and Gypsum be enough?

All I use is Dolo, which avoids Mg issues down the line. This is strictly for pH @1cup/cf. I also use crustacean meal, gypsum, ect for other purposes. Gypsum has little effect on pH (wrong form of Ca (Sulfate not carbonate), but is a good source of calcium. Pure Calcium carbonate is fine...

Just Got A Worm Bin Going

Cool Beans!! Use a very loose mix, adding more perlite is not a bad idea. Be sure to bury the crowns a inch or so below the soil line. Water once a week at most. But I'm sure SM gave you detailed instructions. They will wilt when dry and in hot weather outside, but when watering my outside...

Just Got A Worm Bin Going

Have never even seen seeds, just pups, that Aloe Vera throws quite easily. In SoFl it was known as the 'burn plant' and my G-parents were growing it before I was born. For soil, use a cactus or succulent mix and keep on the dry side. Wet

Coot LOS, Rev TLO, SubCool SuperSoil, BioCanna: Side By Side

Too late now, but from your 1st pic it seemed like you were lacking perlite by at least half and likely to have aeration/drainage problems down the line as stuff starts breaking down. *My* starting point with Perlite is 40% and with other aeration amendments (Pine Bark Fines/Mulch), ends up...

    How to Use Rock Dust

Because they don't really dissolve into the soil. The roots exude 'stuff' to dissolve the RD and make it available. *I* only use Greensand and Azomite now @1cup of each/cf. Wet

    Pot Size for Super Soil

The GroPro 8gal square pot behaves more like a 10gal round and left me very impressed. Kinda do a notill, but DO recycle my soil every couple seasons. Wet

    Bruce banner #3 SSW-supersoil 7 gallons in a greenhouse

The one thing I could suggest with your 7gal smarties is get 1or2 of the GroPro 8 gallon square pots. They seem to work really well, both indoors and full sun stuff. I was really impressed, acted more like a 10gal than the 8gal it was. I've no experience with "greenhouses", but long...

Just Got A Worm Bin Going

Never bothered for several reasons. Mainly, they are easy enough to collect in the wild, but the main reason, compared to comfrey, they take forever to break down (great for a compost pile though). Comfrey, unfrozen, takes about a week. Frozen for a few days, reduces that to ~2 days till it's...

Just Got A Worm Bin Going

Cool Beans! I'm in 7A, so you can easily do a fall planting! I would get in contact with strictly medicinal and check out shipping methods. They were holding off on shipping because of the heat, but are digging comfrey right now. They will resume shipping in Sept. They have always used...

Just Got A Worm Bin Going

First, the place where I got mine is still in business and in stock. strictlymedicinalseeds.com They have the Bocking 14 cultivar, which is a sterile variety that does NOT set seeds and does not spread. But they do warn against rototilling, or, disturbing the roots. Do NOT get 'true' comfrey...

Just Got A Worm Bin Going

From root cuttings or crowns, and you want Bocking 14 Search local first, with the way the mail is now. I just received a small first class package that was shipped 7-26-20 from Anaheim,Ca to NW SC. I did not receive it until 8-17-20. It's normally a 3 day delivery and sometimes, just 2 days...

Using LOS, does size of pot have to be 15gal?

I agree that the "smart" pots aren't that smart at all and more hype than anything else. But they sound cool and for most new growers that's good enough and they'll stick with them regardless of problems encountered. My sorta new favorites are the square GroPro 8gallon heavy duty pots. They...

Organics for 10 years, 1st grow bed problems help!

I also recycle my soil, but have found that, after 4 or 5 years the peat moss is so broken down it becomes almost useless as a medium, with problems similar to what you described. I don't throw it away, but instead use it as a top dress on my soil gardens where it works a treat. Just seems to...
