I have a book that tells me the longer the dark peroid during maturing, the quicker you can get your plants to mature. Not a huge difference, but because they process the sugars during the dark period when they are blooming, you can get them to mature slightly quicker. Is this true?

Actually, I think they look fine. It looks like your topping, and your in a stage of new growth. Topping early keeps them short and bushy. You might want to considering tying some of your tops so you can get more light to the inside of the plant. It'll help your new growth considerably.
