The Search Function

After being here for a while, I came to the conclusion that nobody really uses the search function, or understands how to take full advantage of it. It seems that if a topic isn't on the first page, then it has never been discussed. From what I can see, a good amount of helpful and knowledgeable users have moved on due to this re-hashing over and over, and all the bickering. So I have put together a small how-to with the search function for you to take advantage of past conversations and info. This is my first thread started since I joined 5 months ago. I have found all I needed to know just by using search.

To start, just type in a one or more keywords in the search bar in the top right and hit enter.

Notice that the threads that pop up do not really help to much, as they just contain the keywords somewhere in the posts. For the best results, hit "search" again in the top left and work with "advanced search".

Once you are in advanced search, put your keywords back in the box and change the dropbox next to it to "search titles only" for better results.

Now all of the threads in your search will contain your keyword(s) and will be much more relevant to your search.

Good luck and happy growing. Feel free to ask any questions if you have them. :eyesmoke:

Edit: I fail at working with pictures, but the ones on the bottom work, just have to view them in the correct order, which is 3, 2, 4, 1.

i think most people could figure out how to use it but there just to lazy to take the time to look around they rather ask a question and come back to all the answers

Thing is, a lot of the answers lately are just arguments. Plus, you could have all the answers you need with search in the amount of time it takes you to post a thread. I'm not rallying to stop people from posting threads, just trying to help people get good info.

I like the search function but when I came here I tried to use it and it generated too much random bullshit so I stopped trying.
Eventually I accidentally clicked where you should be able to see the advanced button and realized that it actually existed.
For some reason it does not appear in my browser but it is there. Now that I can use advanced it works like it should.
I just figured it was hidden for other people too so they didn`t know it was there. Am I the only one who can not see the advanced button by the search function?

Very informative, and nice of you to take your time to put that together, but I believe a lot more than not, the problem is laziness.
Even without the 'search' function, if a newb read for just a bit, they could easily find several threads in the 'newb' section about "Is it done yet", or "My bottom leafs are turning yellow", with plenty of answers.
When I have a question, I read, and read, and read some more, before I post a question that seems like it should have been asked already.
Many times, I just read to learn, and don't even have a question, then end up finding a thread like this or something.

Oh I see now. Yeah you can go advanced right from the main page if you just move your mouse to the right of the search box until the cursor turns into a hand. (in my case)
Appears to be a flaw in the site as this bug appears in multiple browsers

Nope...... It doesn't show up on my screen either, but it might be somehow related to your browser, though I don't know how, but I did mention to somebody one night about blocking the ads, to use Firefox instead of Chrome if he didn't want to be bothered with the ads.
I just got so used to blocking them out, I don't even notice them anymore.

Oh I have no doubt people hate to read, lol
Your thread just reminded me of this weird glitch and now maybe they can fix it.

It does not appear in any of my browsers and if you look at the op`s post it is not in his either.
Spooky. lol I feel like scooby doo.

Thanks for pointing that out. I never knew it was there either, but you're right, if you hover over it, the cursor turns to a hand. I found the advanced search by clicking on "search" after the initial search. Like in pic #2. Cause yeah, when you just use the default search, the results are 95% not related to what you are searching for. That's more along the lines of why I created this, I didn't know if people thought the search function was worthless.

Maybe someone can work on fixing that little glitch. Can anyone see the advanced search option to the right of the text box for search?

Not me, just a line beyond the actual box, then like Char said, if you move the cursor past, into the blank area (Who the fuck would figure that one out), then you can click the hand as it changes.

I know right. It's got me panning around the page trying to figure out what other secret spots they have buried. :eyesmoke:

Sometimes I do have a time crunch. I search and find the topic is too deep to wade threw in time to meet the deadline
and I am forced to ask for the bottom line. Or I pm the bear. lol

My intentions were not to discourage anyone from starting threads, but more of a PSA to do some research. I would guess you did a bit of reading before you jumped in, judging by how well your plants have come along. I guess someone already hit on it when they said people don't want to read so they just post a question and come back in a day and get their answers. But in doing this, its doubtful they actually learn anything. But then again, I would assume around 50% of people on the site are one time growers who realize a month in that they won't have smokable bud for another 2 months and say F that, wheres my dealer?

Guess the old saying "give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime" fits in here somewhere. :eyesmoke:
