I'm currently using all hydroton in 3 or 5 gallon pots. I put beans or cuttings in rockwool cubes and put them 1/2 way down. Once the plant grows about 6 nodes I fill the hydroton nearly to the top.

You'll want to use fresh air - it's the best. Make sure you maintain temps & humidity levels during intake times. I always found it most beneficial to get fresh air for my plans.
