Correct me if I'm wrong but cannabis plants not only grow towards the light they use gravity to know which way is up so that could be why when you had the light on everything seemed fine but then when the lights are off the plant wants to grow upwards.

You can break it up or you can leave the bud whole and put it into the pipe, I find that if you don't break it up it will burn longer but I find breaking it up gets me more high.

I grow in soil for now and I use general hydroponics flora nova. The plants seem to really like it and its for hydro and soil.

I can't say for sure but I don't think they will all turn hermi, you may be lucky and none of them will turn. My first grow the plants were interrupted so many times while flowering and none of them turned hermi.

Thats what I was going to say as well. I always wanted to make my own strain, sounds like it would be a pain, but I think if it was done right in the end it would be well worth it.
